Role objectives
The Tax Partner is accountable for overall engagement quality, compliance with filing requirements, and client relationship stewardship across a portfolio of tax engagements. This role sets engagement and practice strategy, oversees risk management and key technical conclusions, drives business development and retention, and develops leaders and teams to deliver consistent, high-quality service.
Key responsibilities
Provide executive oversight for engagement quality and risk management, including review of high-risk areas, key judgments, and final conclusions; ensure compliance with professional standards and firm quality expectations
Lead client relationship management for a portfolio of key accounts, including executive communication, expectation-setting, and issue resolution
Set engagement strategy for complex clients, including risk approach, staffing model, timeline expectations, and review depth; ensure appropriate escalation and decision-making
Serve as the final escalation point for complex technical matters and client disputes; drive timely, supportable resolutions and documentation
Drive business development, including identifying opportunities, leading proposals, and expanding relationships while maintaining a strong risk posture
Oversee and engagement economics, including utilization awareness, delivery discipline, and resource planning; address trends and capacity constraints
Develop and mentor senior leaders (Directors, Senior Managers, Managers) through coaching, feedback, succession planning, and performance management support
Support practice governance and continuous improvement initiatives (quality management, standardization, technology adoption, training, and continuous improvement).
Key accountabilities
Engagement quality outcomes meet firm standards and filing requirements across the portfolio
Key judgments and final conclusions are appropriately reviewed, supported, and documented
Client relationships are stewarded effectively with strong executive communication and issue resolution
Technical and compliance risks are identified, escalated, and resolved with sound, supportable decisions
Practice performance and engagement economics are monitored with timely actions taken on trends and capacity constraints
Leaders are developed through coaching, succession planning, and performance management
Reporting structure
Supervisor: Managing Partner / Tax Practice Leader
Functional/team: Tax practice leadership / engagement leadership (portfolio)
Direct reports: May oversee Tax Managers, and engagement teams
Key cross-functional collaborators: Tax leadership, other service line leaders (as applicable), and client executive stakeholders
Key results / expectations
Consistent, high-quality execution across a portfolio of engagements with strong quality control and minimal rework
Strong risk management and timely resolution of complex technical and client issues
Healthy client relationships with clear expectation-setting, issue de-escalation, retention, and growth support
Predictable engagement delivery discipline and economics oversight
Visible leadership presence and development of Directors/Senior Managers/Managers through coaching and accountability
Informatics & data reporting
Engagement economics (WIP, billing, realization, write-ups/write-downs)
Portfolio KPIs (revenue, margin, leverage, capacity/utilization)
Quality & risk reporting (inspection results, consultations, independence/compliance items)
Delivery & filing status (tax return pipeline, deadlines, extensions, e-file acceptances)
Client portfolio health (retention, satisfaction, at-risk accounts, issue logs)
Business development pipeline (prospects, proposals, win/loss, cross-service opportunities)
Talent metrics (staffing mix, turnover/retention, performance signals, succession coverage)
Skill / knowledge requirements
Extensive knowledge of federal and state tax concepts and tax compliance requirements
Strong engagement strategy and risk management capability across complex clients
Ability to lead leaders, manage risk, and make decisions requiring significant professional judgment
Strong client-facing communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
CPA license required
Professional experience requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
Significant experience leading tax engagements and managing client relationships in a public accounting environment
Experience leading a sizable client portfolio and contributing to practice growth and retention (preferred)
Experience with complex tax issues and multi-state filings (preferred)
Experience leading practice initiatives (capacity planning, standardization, training, methodology/process improvements) (preferred)
