Role DescriptionOur team needs a Software Engineer with experience in TypeScript and/or Python who caresdeeply about our customers’ experience with our product, specifically prioritizing safety andreliability. You will be joining a startup of 8-12 engineers in a combined shop-office space in SanFrancisco, working to build accessible automation tooling for biology from the ground up. Youwill be primarily responsible for specific sub-systems, and you’ll be the point of contact formaintaining, debugging, and improving those systems. You will also be expected to engagewith, debug, and develop on other components in cooperation with coworkers, re-prioritizingyour work as necessary to support the team’s current roadmap or resolve time-sensitive issues. LocationThis role is located in San Francisco, CA, on-site preferred, hybrid possible Responsibilities<ul><li>Develop and maintain internal and customer-facing APIs.</li></ul> - ex. Design a new Tcode (our robot control language) command and implement it on the robot - ex. Add additional data to a calibration command and write a corresponding migrator.<ul><li>Develop new features and improve existing features across the software stack.</li></ul> - ex. Add a calibration data tracking feature for a new robot tool to the system’s configuration database. - ex. Modify a calibration procedure to avoid a robot crash identified in certain edge cases. - ex. Write a custom plugin for the protocol design software to improve a target metric ( e.g. tip usage, throughput, efficiency) for certain biological steps.<ul><li>Proactively identify and resolve (or delegate) software bugs and design limitations in the</li></ul>existing stack.<ul><li>Help reduce the workload of your teammates and be responsible for every single line of</li></ul>code you submit for reviews. Qualifications<ul><li>BS in Computer Science or a related field is preferred, with at least one year of</li></ul> professional experience as a software engineer, or at least three years of as a software engineer without a BS.<ul><li>Ability to code without the assistance of generative AI. While the team regularly utilizes</li></ul> AI agents for basic day-to-day tasks, AI generated code is not acceptable for our safety-critical code path, where reliability and understanding are essential.<ul><li>Strong working knowledge of TypeScript (for UI) and/or Python (for robot control).</li><li>Familiarity with HTTP and REST API designs.</li><li>Experience with multi-service software architectures.</li><li>Contributed to and/or managed one or more large (at least 10k LoC) software projects in</li></ul> the past.<ul><li>Ability to prioritize work that aligns with our vision and product roadmap.</li><li>Ability to learn on the job: We are creating state-of-the-art robotic systems in the lab</li></ul> automation industry. We do not expect you to know everything needed from prior experiences.<ul><li>Ability to continually prioritize and balance tasks: offloading work to other team</li></ul> members, pitching in on their tasks as necessary, and balancing long-term project health with short-term deliverables.<ul><li>Humility and self-assessment of personal skills: asking for help, or for someone to</li></ul> bounce ideas off of, rather than getting stuck. Understanding of trade-offs when hiring contractors/consultants to design and build technology products. Nice to haves<ul><li>Knowledge of linear algebra and/or robotics math.</li><li>Experience with database management.</li></ul> CompensationIn addition to equity and benefits, this role has a compensation range of $130,000-$155,000 peryear, based on your performance and experience. This range reflects our target level for thisrole, but we're open to candidates at a more senior level if the fit is exceptional. Compensationwill be aligned with your experience and our internal benchmarking, and we're happy to havethat conversation as we get to know you better.
