Your role and responsibilities

Join ABB as an R&D Test Automation Engineer and contribute to the validation of high-quality energy management products through automated product testing on real devices and laboratory setups. In this role, you will help build and evolve test automation solutions that connect test benches, meas-urement instruments, device communication interfaces, and Hardware-in-the-Loop environments. You will work close to real products, support continuous improvement of test reliability and coverage, and grow your expertise in product validation, automation, and integrated test systems within a col-laborative R&D team. This role is well suited for someone with initial professional experience who wants to grow into test automation for complex electronic products and integrated laboratory test systems.

This role is contributing to the Energy Management business line in Italy

You will be mainly accountable for:

• Develop, maintain, and improve automated test solutions that increase repeatability, efficiency, and coverage in product-level validation.
• Integrate Devices Under Test, measurement instruments, power/energy measurement equipment, communication interfaces, and test benches into reliable and repeatable Hardware-in-the-Loop test environments.
• Implement test automation software and scripts to control devices, execute test sequences, collect data, manage results, and support reporting activities.
• Work with communication interfaces, protocols, and software libraries such as C#/.NET DLLs to configure products, stimulate test conditions, and verify expected behavior through Mod-bus, M-Bus, Ethernet, TCP/IP, serial communication, or similar technologies.
• Collaborate with firmware, hardware, system, and product teams, gaining exposure to the full product validation process from laboratory testing to product quality improvements.
• Analyze test results, investigate failures, and turn findings into improvements for test coverage, troubleshooting, documentation, traceability, and product quality.
• Contribute to the evolution of test automation practices, data quality, and integrated test systems for real devices and laboratory setups.

You will join the R&D Prototype and Testing team, where you will be able to thrive.

Qualifications for the role

• Hands-on experience with automated test solutions for product-level validation on real devices and laboratory setups.
• Ability to integrate Devices Under Test, measurement instruments, power/energy measurement equipment, communication interfaces, and test benches into automated and repeatable test environments.
• Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop or equivalent automated test setups involving real hardware, instruments, and controlled test conditions.
• Practical programming experience in Python for test automation and framework development; experience with C#/.NET for tool integration, device communication libraries, DLL usage, or automation interfaces.
• Experience with device communication interfaces and protocols such as Modbus, M-Bus, Ethernet, TCP/IP, serial communication, or similar technologies.
• Experience with test automation frameworks and tools such as pytest, TestStand, Azure DevOps, or equivalent solutions for automated test execution, regression testing, and result management.
• Practical knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, especially power/energy measurement equipment and automated data acquisition.
• Experience with version control and collaborative development workflows using Git, SVN, or similar tools.

Minimum annual salary: € 39.000 

Variable Pay: Eligible for Company Productivity Bonus
