What is WEX seeking?

In-house Legal Director, Procurement setting and directing a team strategy and execution roadmap for the global Procurement Legal team, collaborating and problem-solving on a daily basis with the best!  The Legal Director, Procurement will provide general and strategic legal support for WEX’s global Procurement Legal team on a range of vendor and other third-party transactions and related matters. The ideal candidate will operate within a fast-paced and evolving environment, balancing short-term operational execution with long-term strategic outcomes.

How you'll make an impact

  • Lead a team of attorneys and/or legal professionals, maintaining oversight of legal workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality advisory services that align with the goals of supported business units. Focus on building a leadership pipeline by delegating, leading, and mentoring team members working through increasingly complex matters.
  • Provide general in-house support for legal matters concerning WEX’s Procurement team activities and operations, including negotiating high stakes, complex transactions with vendors and other third parties.
  • Review, negotiate, and draft a variety of vendor and third party agreements, leading the  negotiation of sophisticated agreements and navigating material deviations from standard positions, including on technology licenses (software-as-a-service, software, cloud, and related ancillary documents, including SLAs, security exhibits, and privacy addenda), consulting, professional services, telecom, hardware, marketing, real estate, and other services agreements and related documentation.
  • Identify, manage, and proactively escalate issues and risks arising during negotiations, particularly matters with the potential to set enterprise-wide precedents, alter WEX’s legal standing, or involve high legal exposure.
  • Develop and maintain standard templates and playbooks for vendor agreements; provide guidance on development and maintenance of contracting processes to set frameworks, guide teams through ambiguity, and drive alignment across functions.
  • Present complex issues in a clear and concise manner and provide succinct results-oriented legal advice to business owners and stakeholders, expertly balancing business and commercial objectives with risk mitigation.
  • Act as a strategic partner to business leaders (often at the VP/SVP level) with a deep understanding of business priorities, financial drivers, and operational realities. Move beyond reactive advising to proactively shape business decisions and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with other legal colleagues to identify and provide comprehensive legal guidance on interrelated legal matters.
  • Work closely with Procurement and Vendor Risk Management functions to further develop, maintain, and operationalize processes related to vendor assessment, on-boarding, risk and performance monitoring, policy compliance, and offboarding.
  • Manage and resolve specific contractual queries and pre-litigation disputes related to vendor and other third-party contracts.
  • Proactively support opportunities to improve process efficiency within the legal team and move beyond direct problem-solving of individual matters to ensure the team is equipped to handle them effectively and consistently.
  • Be willing to assume additional responsibilities as needed.

Experience you'll bring 

  • J.D. from accredited law school plus 10+ years of legal experience, admitted in at least one U.S. state, ideally with in-house experience
  • Significant experience negotiating technology license agreements (software-as-a-service, software, cloud, and related ancillary documents, including SLAs, security exhibits, and privacy addenda)
  • Experience negotiating consulting, professional services, telecom, hardware, marketing, and real estate agreements
  • Confidence interacting with senior management and sophisticated vendors, serving as a key voice in planning and prioritization discussions
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving, detailed analysis, and issue resolution capabilities, with the ability to lead through organizational and systemic complexity
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex commercial and technical issues and business needs, and to identify and address associated risks by integrating legal strategy with business objectives
  • Demonstrated familiarity and a developing proficiency with AI tools and capabilities, coupled with a strong willingness and eagerness to experiment with and incorporate AI into daily workflows
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, prioritization, and re-prioritization skills, including, in particular, a demonstrated ability to manage high contract volume at times
  • Self-starter and problem solver accustomed to operating independently, but while exercising sound judgment regarding appropriate escalation
  • Proactive in pursuit of continuous improvement, learning new skills, and addressing business needs with practical solutions that shape how the organization approaches risk, opportunity, and decision-making

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan. Pay Range: $195,000.00 - $223,800.00
