Fractional HR Manager (Remote)

San Francisco, CAContract$80–$120/hrPosted Jul 31, 2026

Overview

Malama leverages the best of technology and people to deliver exceptional care - we build novel biometric tracking and patient engagement tools that allow skilled Care Managers to provide high-touch care navigation and coordination for pregnant and postpartum mothers that improves health outcomes for mom and baby.

We've raised $9.2M in funding to date and are on target to hit profitability early this year. Our mission is to improve pregnancy-related outcomes beginning with conditions that disproportionately affect historically underserved groups.

Malama Health is looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented HR professional to own our HR operations across a multi-entity structure (a Delaware C Corp MSO and two affiliated medical practice entities). You'll be the go-to person for payroll accuracy, benefits administration, compliance, and systems — with real ownership over building repeatable processes.

This is a great fit for a senior HR professional who can operate independently and think proactively about what the function needs next — while being willing to roll up their sleeves and get into the weeds of payroll systems, state compliance, and multi-entity setups. We need someone who can both set direction, execute the details, and wants to grow with an early-stage healthcare company.

  • Own resolution of compliance issues and claims (e.g., disability claims, unemployment filings), coordinating with legal counsel and vendors as needed
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of logins, filings, and documentation
  • Partner with outside legal counsel and accounting/tax firms on employment compliance matters

Time & Attendance / Wage & Hour

  • Educate managers and employees on hourly reporting requirements (including for salaried non-exempt staff) and meal/rest break compliance
  • Work with internal stakeholders to systematize hour-reporting deadlines and reduce off-cycle payroll runs
  • Support and help drive adoption of expense reimbursement policies and processes

HR Operations & Employee Experience

  • Maintain employee files, offer letters, and contracts (W-2 and 1099)
  • Serve as a point of contact for a dedicated HR inbox, particularly for state agency communications
  • Participate in day-to-day team communications (Slack) to stay looped in on People-related needs
  • Help run and coordinate payroll cycles alongside finance/ops stakeholders

Requirements

Required

  • 5+ years of HR/People Operations experience, ideally including payroll administration and multi-state compliance
