Job Summary

Responsible for the coordination and execution of capital construction vegetation management activities for the transmission system including contractor oversight, project bids, budget/cash flow projections, and performance analysis of various program initiatives. Engage Transmission Forester during the in-servicing of the line and hand over to operations. In conjunction with forestry management, responsible for the allocation of resources, contract management and oversight, program status and interface with external stakeholders, both within and outside of AEP Transmission.

What You’ll Do:

1.  Develop and maintain performance analysis of various program initiatives, allocation of resources, contract management and program status to enhance program and corporate goals.

2.  Assist in managing contractor oversight programs, including work quality, productivity and safety.

3.  Develop and/or assist in developing annual operations, maintenance and capital budgets for the forestry function.

4.  Coordinate the development and recommendations for approval for policies, practices and procedures pertaining to right-of-way maintenance activities.

5.  Coordinate the development and application of new technologies to enhance right-of-way maintenance programs.

6.  Coordinate the development of new methods to be used in performing right-of-way maintenance work and make recommendations concerning their use.

7.  Recommend future line clearance requirements for both short-term and long-term vegetation management plans.

What You’ll Need:

Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Business, Construction Management, Project Management, Natural Resource Management, Arboriculture, or a related field and two (2) years of experience in utility vegetation management industry, developing work plans and/or evaluating efficiency of such plans; OR Associate's degree in one of the same fields and four (4) years’ experience in utility vegetation management industry OR High school/GED equivalent and six (6) years’ experience of experience in Utility Vegetation Management industry.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to work with various Forestry groups and AEP internal customers, such as Transmission, Corporate Planning & Budgeting, and Internal Audits, as well as external customers, such as line clearing contractors. 

Other competencies include strong oral and written communication skills; consultative and advisory skills; knowledge of Business Objects and other financial reporting systems; and competency in Microsoft office products.

What You’ll Do:

Promote and enforce adherence to the Company’s Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs to safeguard employees, the public, business partners, and Company property with a focus on a commitment to Zero Harm.

  • Ensure all Transmission construction investments are charged in accordance with AEP accounting policies and coordinate the development of the annual O&M and capital budgets for vegetation clearing of Transmission construction projects; monitors budget throughout the year to ensure compliance with assigned spending levels and work plans.
  • Develop and coordinate communication plans associated with Transmission Forestry and contractor projects. Anticipate, forecast, procure, and allocate resources based on organizational goals and on-going capital project schedules to mitigate operational risk.
  • Execute the capital construction vegetation management strategy; implement new program initiatives to ensure ongoing focus on continuous improvement. Drive changes in the process so that results are achieved, and program expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of contract specification and bid documents for capital construction vegetation clearing.
  • Manage contractor oversight programs, including work quality, productivity, and safety.
  • Coordinate storm and disaster response for vegetation management contractors and Forestry staff to support Transmission restoration needs. Coordinate the development and recommends for approval, all policies, practices, and procedures pertaining to Transmission vegetation management methods and technologies to be used in performing vegetation management work and makes recommendations regarding their use.
  • Fosters continuous improvement efforts for both internal employees and contractors. Strategically builds and maintains key contacts and relationships. Serve as liaison between Forestry, Contract Support, Generation, Project Management, Safety, Environmental and Outreach for capital construction vegetation management activities.
  • Develop and maintain performance analysis of various program initiatives, allocation of resources, contract management and program status to enhance program and corporate goals.

What You’ll Need:

Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Business, Construction Management, Project Management, Natural Resource Management, Arboriculture, or a related field and twelve (12) years of experience in utility vegetation management industry, OR Associate's degree in one of the same fields and fourteen (14) years’ experience in utility vegetation management industry OR High school/GED equivalent and sixteen (16) years’ experience in the Utility Vegetation Management industry. 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • ISA Certified Arborist/Utility Arborist is required.
  • Must possess valid state driver’s license.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of financial and economic analysis, disaster recovery, project management, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Travel throughout the AEP Transmission footprint required.
  • Strong employee and customer relationship building skills.
