Central Utility Plant (CUP) Field Service Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Central Utility Plant (CUP) Field Service Manager is responsible for leading all field activities associated with large-scale modular utility plant projects supporting hyperscale data center campuses. This role provides technical leadership, project oversight, resource planning, quality assurance, customer coordination, and operational support from factory acceptance through site startup, integrated systems testing, and final customer acceptance. The CUP Field Service Manager serves as the primary authority for commissioning execution and coordinates field resources, subcontractors, and technical specialists to ensure safe, efficient, and successful project delivery.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute commissioning strategies for multiple concurrent CUP projects.
  • Establish commissioning schedules, staffing plans, testing sequences, and project execution plans.
  • Lead commissioning activities from factory turnover through customer acceptance.
  • Coordinate pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing activities.
  • Manage startup and commissioning of chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, electrical distribution systems, VFDs, PLCs, and BMS controls.
  • Support Service Project Managers during site mobilization, installation completion, and pre-commissioning activities.
  • Manage commissioning labor budgets and forecast resource requirements.
  • Coordinate startup vendors, subcontractors, and OEM representatives.
  • Provide technical guidance to Field Supervisors, Field Engineers, and Service Technicians.
  • Lead troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, controls, and integrated system issues.
  • Serve as the primary commissioning interface with customer commissioning teams.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, customer requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Promote safe execution of all commissioning activities.
  • Capture lessons learned and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Management.

JOB SKILLS:

  • Strong leadership and technical mentoring skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of central utility plant systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, P&IDs, control sequences, and electrical schematics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical discipline.
  • Equivalent combination of military, trade, commissioning, or field leadership experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10+ years of experience in commissioning, startup, operations, service, or construction of industrial HVAC, district cooling, utility plants, power generation, or data center infrastructure.
  • Minimum 5 years leading commissioning teams on complex industrial or mission-critical projects.
  • Experience with chilled water plants, cooling towers, pumps, VFDs, PLCs, and building automation systems.
  • Ability to travel extensively to project sites.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Data center commissioning experience.
  • Hyperscale or mission-critical facility experience.
  • Experience with modular construction and factory-built utility plant systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Combination of office, manufacturing, and active construction site environments.
  • Travel requirement of approximately 40%–60%.
  • Ability to walk active construction sites for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and access equipment platforms.
  • Required use of PPE and compliance with site safety requirements.
