About the Role

Our client is a long-standing and growing real estate private equity firm based in Provo, UT, seeking a Fund Accounting Manager to lead ownership accounting for the active joint venture (JV) portfolio of approximately 135 properties. The firm operates two investment arms: a JV side, where they source, fund, and acquire properties through one-off syndications, and a fund side, which raises $200–300M investment funds and acquires assets over time.

This role's primary responsibility is the joint venture portfolio. Candidates with genuine interest and capability in fund accounting are encouraged to apply — for the right person, this role can expand to cover both the JV and fund sides, with compensation adjusted accordingly.

Property accounting and property management are handled entirely by separate companies — this role does not touch that side of the business. Instead, this position owns ownership accounting: tracking equity in each deal, calling capital from investors, and executing quarterly distributions.

What You'll Own

  • Track all equity in a deal, call capital from investors, and perform quarterly distributions
  • Own everything on the equity side of the balance sheet
  • Full responsibility for the balance sheet
  • Maintain fixed assets, including setup of properties at acquisition
  • Break out cost segregation studies
  • Conduct annual expense reviews to identify capitalizable costs
  • Manage all deals and partnership agreements
  • Coordinate cash disbursements to the management company for capex needs
  • Manage equity and hold assets to pro forma
  • Support pre-deal setup: legal coordination, org structure charts, opening bank accounts
  • Partner closely with asset management, investor relations, FP&A, and the deal team throughout acquisitions
  • Oversee audits
  • Manage timelines, deliverables, and third-party service providers
  • Operate on an annual close cycle (no monthly close), with year-end tax packets prepared for outside tax firms
  • Lead a rolling quarterly review cycle covering roughly 25% of the portfolio each quarter, ensuring every property is reviewed at least twice annually
  • Manage 2 direct reports, driving accountability around deliverables, deadlines, and audit management

Must-Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required — finance, economics, or related fields will not be considered)
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideal is FUND ACCOUNTING
  • Management experience preferred, or significant experience training and developing junior staff
  • Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating external audits for a multi-entity portfolio
  • Strong GAAP knowledge, with experience in partnership and joint venture accounting, equity reconciliations, and intercompany transactions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — this role interfaces directly with auditors, asset managers, lenders, and investors
  • Real estate industry experience is not required — the firm will train the right candidate on the industry
