Job Description
St. James Healthcare is seeking a dedicated Limited Permit X-Ray Tech to join our Imaging team on a PRN basis. This position is ideal for a student actively enrolled in an accredited Radiologic Technology program who has obtained a Montana Limited Permit and is gaining valuable clinical experience while supporting exceptional patient care.
The Limited Permit X-Ray Tech performs radiographic procedures in accordance with Montana State Licensure guidelines and provider specifications to obtain high-quality diagnostic images. Under the supervision of a Registered Radiologic Technologist and/or Radiologist, the Limited Permit X-Ray Tech transfers patients, utilizes ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging, and assists with examination procedures.
Important: The Limited Permit X-Ray Tech may only perform duties when a Registered Radiologic Technologist is on duty and present within the same facility.
Essential Job Duties
- Access, manage, and accurately update patient records using the hospital's electronic medical record systems.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and privacy regulations.
- Practice in accordance with ARRT Standards of Ethics.
- Educate and prepare patients for imaging procedures, including explaining safety precautions and the effects of radiation exposure.
- Position patients appropriately and utilize immobilization devices when necessary to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
- Administer contrast media orally or intravenously according to Radiologist and Pharmacy guidelines.
- Monitor patients throughout imaging procedures and respond appropriately to patient needs.
- Practice radiation protection and universal safety precautions to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and self.
- Perform radiographic examinations authorized under the Montana Limited Permit, including:
- Chest
- Extremities
- Spine
- Abdomen
- Gastrointestinal (GI) Studies
- Fluoroscopy
- Participate in ongoing educational activities and maintain professional competency.
- Complete annual department and position-specific competencies.
- Support the mission, vision, values, and service standards of St. James Healthcare.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Float to other departments, within scope of competency and qualifications, as business needs require.
- Participate in on-call coverage when assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled and actively participating in an accredited Radiologic Technology Program.
- Current clinical rotation facility is St. James Healthcare.
- Current Montana Limited Permit to perform radiographic examinations.
- ARRT certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within sixty (60) days of hire.
- Eligible to work under Montana's Limited Permit provisions for one six-month permit term.

- Ability to solve practical problems and exercise sound judgment in patient care situations.
- Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions.
