About the Position

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Operating Engineer to join our underground utility construction team. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment and supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems. The ideal candidate has experience working in utility construction, understands trench safety requirements, and can work efficiently as part of a crew in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, and trenching equipment.
  • Perform excavation and grading activities for underground water, sewer, and storm drainage projects.
  • Assist with the installation of water mains, sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure.
  • Read and interpret project plans, grade stakes, utility locates, and construction specifications.
  • Safely excavate around existing underground utilities and structures.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and trench excavation requirements.
  • Work closely with supervisors, laborers, pipe layers, and utility crews to complete projects on schedule.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment operation, fuel usage, and project activities.
  • Respond to emergency utility repairs when necessary.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction.
  • Experience working on water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer projects.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of trench safety, utility locating practices, and excavation procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor when required.

Preferred

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Confined Space Entry certification.
  • NCCCO, IUOE, or other equipment operation certifications.
  • Experience with GPS machine control systems and laser grading equipment.
