Why This Role Matters

The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished, versatile journalist to serve as Asia Correspondent on a five-month contract, covering one of the world's most dynamic and strategically important regions.

This is a unique opportunity with The Post's International team during a period of significant geopolitical, economic and technological change. The correspondent will focus primarily on China and how its growing geopolitical, military and economic power is affecting U.S. interests in the region, particularly with American treaty allies such as Japan, South Korea and Australia. We are looking for a journalist who can break news, produce authoritative analysis and deliver reporting that helps readers understand a region at the center of global affairs.

The ideal candidate combines regional knowledge with strong reporting instincts and a compelling narrative voice. They should be comfortable covering elections, diplomacy and security issues while also keeping an eye on trade and technological developments that have a direct impact on American economic interests. This reporter will help readers understand not only what is happening across the region, but ultimately why it matters to audiences in the United States.

This role will work closely with correspondents, editors and visual journalists across The Post's international report to produce journalism that is ambitious, insightful and globally resonant.

This temporary position is expected to begin in late August and run for approximately five months through the conclusion of a parental leave. Potential work locations include Taiwan, Singapore or South Korea.

• Collaborate closely with international correspondents, editors and visual journalists to produce ambitious, multi-format storytelling.

• Identify emerging trends and storylines that will shape the region and the world.

• A track record of high-impact international reporting.

• Experience covering East Asia.

• The ability to report independently in a fast-moving environment.

• Excellent reporting, writing and storytelling skills.

• A sophisticated understanding of regional politics, economics and security issues.

• The ability to move seamlessly between breaking news, enterprise and explanatory journalism.

• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to reporting.

• A commitment to accuracy, fairness and the highest standards of journalism.
