About the role: Join our WATCHMAN Sustaining R&D team, where we protect product quality, compliance, and business continuity across a portfolio of commercial medical devices. Our engineers improve and optimize released products, solve complex technical challenges, and ensure WATCHMAN technologies continue to meet the needs of patients, physicians, and the business throughout their lifecycle.

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative R&D Manager (M3) to lead a team of engineers supporting WATCHMAN products made at Boston Scientific’s Cartago manufacturing site and global WATCHMAN sustaining initiatives.

This manager will be responsible for guiding the team through continued prioritization of our project portfolio, in day-to-day technical and business-level decision making, and in hiring and developing the best talent for supporting the divisional initiatives. The ideal candidate is expected to have proven the ability to lead and build trust with peers and/or direct reports and demonstrates strong leadership and cross-functional decision-making skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in functional deliverables as needed and ensures technical excellence for Sustaining R&D.
  • Provides guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches.
  • Assists in identifying new opportunities to drive design quality improvements, and complaint reductions, and value improvements.
  • Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in attaining career goals, motivates individuals to achieve results, and recruits and maintains a high-quality staff.
  • Assists in and/or completes the development in adherence to budgets.
  • Assists in identifying and developing department tools and systems.
  • Assists in and/or determines appropriate staff levels, schedules and resources. Works with project managers to understand priorities and plans resource and time allocation accordingly.
  • Collaboratively determines project staff assignments and schedules work to meet completion dates and R&D deliverables.
  • Maintains and enhances cross-functional team relationships.
  • Works cross-functionally in identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Monitors and evaluates project and department progress and results.
  • Leads and mentors a group or team of employees in the achievement of organizational goals. Guides, coaches, and develops direct reports, and drives best practices throughout the organization.
  • Fosters a workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 8+ years technical roles, preferably in medical device industry
  • 1+ years leadership experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Licenciature desired) in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Equivalent.
  • A positive attitude, innovative and creative thinker.
  • Ability to transparently and concisely communicate technical issues and risks across all levels of the organization
  • Experience developing a team culture of knowledge driven product development & engineering excellence
  • Working knowledge of complex mechanical design principles and FDA/BSI regulated medical device design controls
  • Experience with statistical data analysis and data driven decision making.
  • Desired knowledge: Desing control methods such as Risk Analysis (dFMEA, pFMEA) Desing Validation and Verification plans, protocol and report generation. PDP/TDP system.
  • Track record of strong cross-functional collaboration, influence, and project management enabling highly effective project teams
  • Practiced problem solver, proficient in problem solving methodologies (i.e. DMAIC, Six Sigma, statistical analysis, etc.)
  • Passion to learn new technologies and find new solutions
  • Passion for understanding and solving problems for end users and for team members / direct reports
  • Takes initiative and acts quickly to drive solutions
  • Professional English Level (C1: 90-94%)
