Job Purpose

The Director, Marketing Communications owns how Hyliion is understood by customers, investors, media, employees, and partners. This role sets the strategic direction for corporate and executive communications, public relations, brand management, and marketing communications, and is accountable for translating company strategy, technical progress, and business milestones into clear and credible narratives across all channels. The position leads and develops a team and function that scale with Hyliion’s growth, partners with the leadership team on high-stakes communications. This position operates as both a strategic owner and a hands-on contributor, flexing between communications strategy, team leadership, and direct production based on business needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communications Strategy and Brand Management

  • Sets the vision for and lead execution of Hyliion's corporate and marketing communications strategy in alignment with commercial priorities, corporate objectives, and key milestones.
  • Define and own the narrative for Hyliion and the KARNO technology across customers, investors, media, employees, and partners.
  • Establish, own and enforce brand guidelines, including visual identity, messaging, terminology, tone of voice, photography, renderings, and technical language.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing communications and marketing team.
  • Own crisis and issues communications strategy and readiness, partnering with executive leadership and legal counsel.
  • Own the communications calendar and ensure timely, validated communication of milestones.
  • Direct brand engagement strategy across owned, earned, social, and selectively used paid channels.

Corporate, Executive, and Investor Communications

  • Lead corporate communications, executive messaging, thought leadership, internal communications, and communications strategy for events and announcements.
  • Direct development of executive presentations, briefing materials, talking points, bylined articles, podcast opportunities, and conference participation, including for the CEO and executive team.
  • Partner with finance and executive leadership to shape earnings materials, investor presentations, stakeholder communications, and a consistent equity narrative.
  • Develop and execute a media strategy that positions Hyliion and KARNO across priority business, financial, energy, technology, defense, and trade media.
  • Build relationships with priority journalists, editors, analysts, podcast hosts, and industry influencers.

Commercial Enablement and Marketing Communications

  • Direct and execute marketing communications for the KARNO Power Module across key application industries, including data centers and AI infrastructure, defense and government, and commercial and industrial power applications.
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering to translate validated technical and commercial milestones into content for general and technical audiences.
  • Develop product messaging, marketing collateral, presentations, sales enablement materials, demonstration content, videos, case studies, and customer-facing materials.
  • Own and lead events marketing across trade shows, industry conferences, and customer demonstrations, including booth presence, event messaging, collateral, and follow-up content.

Digital Channels, Brand Operations, and Performance

  • Own Hyliion's corporate website, newsroom, social media channels, and digital content strategy, keeping company, product, leadership, milestone, and news content current.
  • Strengthen Hyliion's digital presence and search authority around priority technologies, markets, and applications.
  • Manage internal graphic design and external media production resources to ensure consistent brand execution.
  • Define, own, and manage communications performance indicators focused on credibility, engagement, message adoption, stakeholder understanding, and commercial enablement.
  • Report progress, insights, risks, and opportunities to leadership.
  • Flex between strategic ownership, team leadership, and hands-on production based on business needs.

Qualifications include:

  • Education, Experience and Certifications
    • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, business, or a related field.
    • 10 or more years of experience in corporate communications, marketing communications, public relations, brand management, or a related role.
    • Experience working within energy, technology, industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, or another technically complex industry preferred.
    • Experience managing executive communications, media relationships, public relations agencies, websites, digital channels, and significant corporate announcements.
    • Experience developing product marketing materials, case studies, thought-leadership content, and multimedia assets.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical and commercial information into clear and compelling communications.
    • Strong writing, editing, messaging, presentation, and storytelling skills.
    • Strong strategic and project-management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders.
    • Ability to work effectively with executive leadership, investor relations, business development, engineering, legal, customers, and external partners.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop a team.

 

Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.

 

Physical/Other Requirements

Minimal travel required: typically less than 10%, with occasional increases during trade shows, events, or conferences.

This position has or may have direct reports.
