Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), Space Mission Systems (SMS) Division, is seeking a Space Missions Systems Communications Systems Chief Engineer to join our team in El Segundo or Seal Beach, California

Boeing Space Mission Systems (SMS) is the unmanned space group within Boeing Space, Intelligence & Weapon Systems. SMS has a long history of developing and deploying communications systems for our government and commercial Customers. We are looking to hire a Communications Systems Chief Engineer responsible for technical oversight of this portfolio of programs. The Communications Systems Chief Engineer will work to shape end-to-end communications solutions including how the different systems integrate with each other.  The Comm Systems CE will then with work the program design team to assure we are offering the optimal solutions across cost, technical, schedule and risk for our Customers. The Comm Systems CE will also work with programs to assure all technical aspects are executed properly including product definition, validation, software and systems engineering, design integration, test and evaluation, and certification for the Boeing team and all associated supplier work content.  The Comm Systems Chief Engineer will also develop multi-disciplined skills, model-based tools, and standardized processes to deliver engineering for Space products through the lifecycle of the programs.  The Comm Systems Chief Engineer will also be responsible for developing a strong team of Communication Systems engineers to assure we can meet all of our Customer’s needs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • ​Responsible for technical leadership, problem resolution, and engineering processes associated with executing Communication Systems programs including comm systems level hardware design, subsystem production, factory assembly, integration, verification testing, on-orbit test, and sustainment

  • Responsible for understanding how the government and commercial communications systems requirements, how these systems operate and how these systems integrate together.

  • Partners closely with Site Leadership, Program Managers, Capability Directors, Business Chief Engineers and IPT leads to maintain consistent design and project direction, develop policies, procedures, and guidelines related to Communication Systems.

  • Assures the programs are properly executing Technical Readiness Reviews (TRR) and Failure Review Boards (FRB) to drive rapid design and issue closure for Communication Systems.

  • Develops and executes the Communication Systems Engineering long term strategy to drive engineering discriminators on these key programs while demonstrating long term affordability

  • Supports new business activities and leads engineering review assessments (ERAs) for proposals.

  • Influence program strategy, technology roadmaps, and proposal success to keep Boeing SMS at the forefront of space communications.

  • Derives Communication Systems product and technology insertion roadmaps from Strategic Plan (LRBP) across the programs in support of affordability and competitiveness

  • Leads and mentors a high-performing engineering team delivering mission-critical space communication capabilities to government customers.

  • Partners closely with Program Managers and capability leads to enhance critical Communication Systems engineering skills and manage key personnel resources

  • Implements and enforces engineering functional excellence in people, processes, tools, and practices

  • Drives successful integration of advanced technologies into a complex communication system with First Time Quality (FTQ)

  • Implements Technical Independent Reviews (TIRs) and Non-Advocate Reviews (NARs) with approved personnel to ensure technical expertise across the enterprise is engaged as needed

This position is expected to be 100% onsite at one of the listed locations.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • 10+ years of experience in communication/systems engineering

  • 10+ years of experience designing space communication systems

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelors or higher in Electrical Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience leading engineering teams

Typical Education/Experienced:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard

Summary Pay Range: $210,800 - $285,200
