Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Computer Operator to support the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Department of War Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC). This position serves as the primary operational monitor for High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, enterprise storage, and critical facility infrastructure while providing Tier 1 user support and coordinating issue resolution with technical teams.

Shift: Second Shift (1500 – 2300 EST). Candidates must be flexible to support varying schedules, including weekends and holidays, based on mission requirements.

This position is onsite at WPAFB, Dayton OH.

Key responsibilities are:
  • Monitor the health, availability, and performance of HPC systems, enterprise storage, and facility infrastructure using system dashboards and monitoring tools.
  • Monitor data center environmental systems, power distribution, UPS/generator status, and facility alarms, initiating appropriate response actions when required.
  • Perform scheduled facility inspections and operational checks while documenting system status and observations.
  • Serve as the first point of response for operational alerts, performing initial troubleshooting and escalating hardware, software, network, or facility issues to the appropriate technical teams.
  • Provide Tier 1 Help Desk support, including account assistance, password resets, ticket creation, and basic troubleshooting in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, shift documentation, and ServiceNow tickets to ensure effective communication and continuity between shifts.
  • Deliver detailed shift turnover briefings and identify recurring operational issues or process improvement opportunities.


Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of computer hardware, software, networking concepts.
  • Strong troubleshooting, customer service, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Willingness to work primarily second shift (1500 – 2300 EST) with flexibility to support weekends, holidays, and alternate schedules as required to meet mission needs.


Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in a Network Operations Center (NOC), data center, Help Desk, or enterprise IT environment.
  • Familiarity with Linux/UNIX operating systems and HPC environments.
  • Experience using system monitoring tools, workload managers (e.g., SLURM), or enterprise monitoring platforms.
  • CompTIA Security+, Linux+, ITIL v4 Foundation, or equivalent technical certifications.


Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $36367 - $58187

However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
