Amentum is a Lot 1 key delivery partner within the Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Partners (DNWP) Framework, a major Sellafield programme worth up to £4.6 billion and running for up to 15 years. The framework is focused on safely accelerating decommissioning, remediation and high‑hazard risk reduction across one of the most complex nuclear sites in the world.
Our nuclear team supports the front‑end design, engineering, technical leadership and delivery expertise required across the DNWP portfolio. We are looking for individuals with high‑value expertise from across regulated and comparable sectors to who can work collaboratively, embrace new challenges and contribute to the mission of safely and efficiently delivering Sellafield’s decommissioning and nuclear waste objectives.
About the Opportunity
As a Senior Planning Engineer you will be responsible to provide planning services on assigned projects and where required, to lead planning engineers and project controls apprentices.
You will typically report directly to Planning Manager / Head of Project Controls within the organisation and may lead a small group of planning engineers on lager scale projects / more complex tasks. You will be interacting with the projects that you are supporting on a day-to-day basis and acts within a senior / leadership capacity within the project.
Employee will be expected to contribute to the delivery of social value in line with the DNWP framework, supporting positive outcomes for local communities. Voluntary engagement is supported, with up to 16 hours per full‑time equivalent allocated.
Key Responsibilities:
Production, development and maintenance of project schedules from project defined scope. May create integrated schedules across projects / programmes of work.
Resource and cost load the schedules in line with the project estimate.
Production of a project schedule baseline and the continuous update and monitoring of the project baseline through change control.
Provide project resource utilisation requirements from the project schedule to assist the project delivery timescales.
Hold/attend weekly project schedule reviews with the project teams to monitor delivery of the project schedule, circulating look-ahead information and implementing recovery plans as required.
Oversee schedule governance and verify inputs
Provide weekly/monthly progress updates producing BCWP ‘Budget Cost of Work Performed’ information for earned value, SPI ‘Schedule Performance Indices’ and SV ‘Schedule Variance’ for project performance.
Liaise with the cost engineer to accurately assess the financial status of the project to the required level on the project schedule, producing CPI ‘Cost Performance Indices’ and CV ‘Cost Variance’ for project performance.
Produce project schedule forecasts, advising the project team in areas of risk, slippage to dates and milestone delivery and overall project completion.
Provide advice and direction to project managers, engineering leads and functional leads, plus the wider project controls function.
Supply any required information to support the Project Manager/Project in preparation of any monthly status reports as directed.
Carry out work in accordance with company standard operating procedures and where applicable client operating procedures.
Makes higher level decisions in relation to planning approaches, reporting structures and phasing and logic (with support from the planning manager)
Attend Project OPRs or assist Planning Manager in preparation for / attendance of business PARs.
Lead, advise and assist planning engineers and project controls apprentices where required.
Essential Skills & Experience:
Holds Professional Qualification in Project Management, Project Controls, Quantity Surveying, Engineering or equivalent experience
Proven significant relevant experience of both managing and providing planning services for either a major project or a multiple-project programme
Extensive project planning and scheduling experience (Primavera P6 Advanced/MS Project)
Experience in schedule development, resource/cost loading, forecasting, and performance analysis.
Experience identifying and mitigating project risks and implementing recovery plans.
Experience working with clients, project teams, and senior stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
Demonstrable experience producing project forecasts, progress reporting, and performance analysis using EVM techniques.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and continuous improvement capabilities.
Understanding of how engineering and construction projects are delivered
Strong stakeholder management, and communication skills.
Knowledge of project controls, resource planning, forecasting, and change management.
