Job Description:

  • Schedule: M-Th 2300-0700
  • Answers telephones and intercom professionally, taking and relaying messages accurately and promptly.
  • Assembles complete medical records for each patient.
  • Provides printed verification of physician consults, including time, date, and personal information.
  • Acts as a communication liaison for patients, families, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Greets visitors and answers telephones with a positive attitude while maintaining security and confidentiality for patients.
  • Clarifies unclear orders with the RN/LPN.
  • Ensures accurate patient location within the computer and promptly removes patients upon discharge.
  • Monitors PALS list and notifies the primary nurse of new orders and pending results every 30 minutes.
  • Serves as a resource for medical and nursing staff regarding the order entry process and may initiate Quality Measure Consoles as needed.
  • Maintains a neat and tidy work area.
  • Conducts customer service rounds, responding to patient requests within the scope of practice, such as providing ice, blankets, pillows, and adjusting room temperature.
  • Initiates work orders and manages unit equipment, including allocation, distribution, and reconciliation.
  • Assists with new patient room setup and orientation, and helps licensed staff with minor transport needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer proficiency required, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel) and basic computer knowledge [Required]
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred, familiarity with medical terminology and computerized order entry [Required]
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both verbal and written in English), and customer service skills [Required]
  • Effective organizational, problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow directions and take instruction [Required]
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all served, including face-to-face and through various communication devices [Required]
  • Demonstrates accurate typing skills and the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work well in high volume/stressful environments [Required]
  • Proficient knowledge of general office and communication equipment, including safe and efficient use of telephones, copier/fax machines, and computers [Required]
  • Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality [Required]
  • Flexibility and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively [Required]
  • Demonstrates recognition of emergency codes, infection control, life safety, fire plan, age-specific considerations, and implements measures to meet these needs [Required]
  • Understands the electronic medical record and proficiently uses it for retrieval of patient information under confidentiality guidelines [Required]
  • Experience working in a hospital or medical center setting [Preferred]
  • Additional languages [Preferred]
