Warren, MIFull-timePosted Jul 28, 2026

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

This team defines the enterprise strategy for how high-voltage batteries will be safely, efficiently, and economically serviced across their full lifecycle. It works across service engineering, root cause, remanufacturing, recycling, analytics, and aftersales readiness to improve product design, enable scalable repair solutions, and maximize battery value through reuse, repair, and end-of-life optimization.

This position may be filled with a Senior Serviceability Design Engineer or Serviceability Design Engineer. The level for this role will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience.

What You'll Do: Serviceability Design Engineer

  • Define service strategies for high-voltage battery packs, including repair paths, component replacement, and non-serviceable content.

  • Develop serviceability requirements and influence battery designs to improve safe, efficient, and cost-effective repairs.

  • Lead special service tool specification, development, validation, and sourcing for battery service and internal repairs.

  • Coordinate cross-functional readiness across parts, packaging, training, field support, supply chain, and remanufacturing.

  • Support launch execution by resolving service issues, validating processes, and ensuring aftersales readiness milestones.

  • Partner with suppliers and internal teams to review designs, evaluate prototypes, and drive issue resolution.

  • Develop lifting, handling, and safety strategies for battery pack service using engineering analysis and test data.

  • Present service recommendations, risks, and progress updates to leadership to support timely enterprise decisions.

What You’ll Do: Senior Serviceability Design Engineer

  • Define and own the serviceability strategy for high-voltage battery systems across the full product lifecycle, including repair architecture, replacement boundaries, diagnostic pathways, and non-serviceable content decisions.

  • Establish serviceability requirements and drive their integration into battery system designs to improve safety, repair efficiency, cost, and downstream operational scalability.

  • Influence battery pack, module, and component design decisions through early program engagement, technical reviews, tradeoff assessments, and cross-functional alignment.

  • Lead development, validation, sourcing, and implementation of special service tools, internal repair equipment, and handling solutions required to support production and field service operations.

  • Drive enterprise readiness across service parts, packaging, training, field support, supply chain, warranty, remanufacturing, and recycling teams to ensure complete aftersales execution.

  • Lead technical evaluation of repair concepts, prototype builds, validation events, and pilot repair processes to confirm feasibility, robustness, and safety compliance.

  • Develop and govern lifting, handling, containment, and high-voltage safety strategies for battery pack service using engineering analysis, testing, lessons learned, and field feedback.

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for battery serviceability topics with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and strategic partners, driving timely issue resolution and decision-making.

  • Support vehicle and battery launches by identifying service risks early, resolving barriers to readiness, and ensuring delivery of critical service milestones, procedures, tools, and support plans.

  • Analyze field issues, service trends, and root cause information to drive continuous improvement in battery service methods, design standards, and lifecycle strategies.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers and cross-functional teams in serviceability best practices, battery repair strategy, and safe service execution.

  • Present service strategy, design recommendations, risks, investment needs, and execution status to senior leadership to enable informed enterprise decisions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications): Serviceability Design Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree; Electrical, Software Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage battery architecture, diagnostics, serviceability, and safe repair execution.

  • 1 - 3+ years of experience developing service strategies for battery systems across launch readiness and aftersales support.

  • Proven ability to define serviceability requirements and influence product designs through cross-functional collaboration.

  • Experience specifying, validating, and sourcing special service tools for battery service and repair.

  • Strong technical judgment in evaluating repair concepts, safety risks, and practical service solutions.

  • Ability to manage suppliers, prototypes, reviews, and issue resolution with urgency and accountability.

  • Effective communication skills to present technical recommendations, risks, and decisions to leadership and stakeholders.
