The mandate of the Global Head of Tax is to lead all aspects of a global tax function for OMERS including setting tax policy and strategy, managing Canadian & international tax issues on complex transactions, building relationships with global tax authorities and pension peers, and overseeing all aspects of income tax and indirect  tax compliance, reporting and risk management.

The Global Head of Tax is a member of a number of internal committees including but not limited to the Portfolio Management Committee (PMC) and OMERS Tax, Legal, Finance Committee, and delivers an annual update to the Audit & Risk Committee of the OMERS Board.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the global tax function across OMERS and Oxford, including by establishing and implementing our global tax strategy, providing executive leadership with practical and value-added advice on all tax matters, and managing all aspects of the investment tax, tax compliance and enterprise tax functions. 

  • Overseeing tax structuring and diligence on all transactions (including pursuits/acquisitions, restructurings, refinancing and exits) and transparently communicating key tax considerations to senior leadership during the investment approval process.

  • Cultivating strong relationships with governments and tax authorities in partnership with Government Relations colleagues, and serving as a global leader in advocating for tax policies that protect OMERS global investment returns and support strong outcomes for our members. 

  • Proactively managing tax audits and litigation to optimize outcomes while protecting key tax positions.

  • Overseeing global direct and indirect tax compliance, payments and reporting, and assisting with development and implementation of appropriate internal controls.

  • Collaborating seamlessly with colleagues in Finance, Legal and HR to provide tax advice and implement tax “best practices” on enterprise tax matters including debt issuances, transfer pricing, global mobility and governance.

  • Evolving use of tax technology, AI and financial systems integration to deliver efficiencies and manage risk.

  • Building and maintaining a best-in-class global tax team, with strong internal capabilities and meaningful opportunities for career growth.

  • Establishing strong collaborative partnerships with leaders across the OMERS enterprise, global pension plans, and external advisors.

  • Working collaboratively with the Oxford CFO on tax matters impacting Oxford

Required Capabilities & Experience:

  • Minimum 15 years of progressive tax experience, including leadership responsibility for a global tax function.

  • Extensive experience leading large, complex global teams and managing significant strategic and operational responsibilities

  • Undergraduate degree and a professional designation or advanced degree such as CPA, MBA, LLB, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Deep expertise in corporate, investment, and international tax matters, including experience advising on complex transactions and financing structures

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate effectively with executive leadership, boards, committees, external stakeholders and lender organizations

  • Proven ability to build, develop and inspire a high-performing and engaged team

  • Experience demonstrating sound, common-sense business judgment and strategic insight as well as deep execution capabilities

  • Must possess highly developed interpersonal and relationship management skills including highly developed negotiating skills

  • Action-oriented, possessing a high degree of initiative with ability to deliver results

Preferred Capabilities & Experience:

  • Experience within a large, global investment management, pension, financial services, or asset management organization

  • Experience navigating evolving international tax regulations and governance frameworks
