Senior Software Engineer

Oakland, CAFullTimePosted Jul 29, 2026

About Remedy

Remedy is a startup committed to addressing the planet’s enormous challenge of environmentally contaminated land. Our mission is to bring contaminated sites back online by turning idle, polluted land into space that can be built on again. We do this by building massively scalable, automated systems that combine novel chemistry, hardware, and software.

Position Summary

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help design and build Remedy’s core product systems. This is a backend-focused full-stack role. You will spend most of your time building services, APIs, data models, and data processing workflows, while also implementing the product interfaces needed to deliver features end-to-end.

You will work closely with the Software Engineering Lead and collaborate directly with scientific, product, and operational teammates. Our software team is small, giving you substantial ownership of the systems we build and meaningful influence over our technical direction and engineering practices.

We are looking for someone who develops a deep understanding of business needs and takes ownership of outcomes. You will identify requirements and edge cases, propose thoughtful technical approaches, and carry solutions through deployment and iteration.

Our product surface is broad, and requirements will evolve as we learn from users and real-world operations. Success requires finding creative ways to deliver quickly while making deliberate decisions about robustness, simplicity, maintainability, and technical debt.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services, APIs, data models, and data processing workflows that power Remedy’s core product capabilities

  • Build and maintain the frontend features and user interfaces that bring those capabilities to users, delivering complete product workflows across the stack

  • Own product and engineering problems from discovery through design, implementation, deployment, and iteration

  • Collaborate with scientific, product, and operational teammates to understand real-world workflows, identify underlying needs, and develop effective solutions

  • Investigate complex and evolving problems, identify requirements, risks, and edge cases, and translate them into clear technical approaches

  • Contribute well-reasoned proposals to technical design discussions, evaluate alternatives, and collaborate with the team to refine solutions

  • Partner with the Software Engineering Lead to shape and evolve system architecture as requirements change

  • Build systems that transform documents, laboratory results, field data, and operational data into structured and reliable outputs

  • Integrate applied AI capabilities such as document extraction, retrieval, and report generation into reliable product features

  • Write clear, tested, and maintainable code, and conduct thoughtful code reviews that improve code quality and share technical context across the team

  • Balance delivery speed with reliability, maintainability, and the long-term health of the codebase

  • Help improve engineering practices around testing, deployment, observability, documentation, and system reliability

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent evidence of strong technical judgment and independent ownership

  • Significant experience designing, building, and operating backend systems in production

  • Strong production experience with TypeScript, Python, or another modern language used to build web applications and backend services, with the ability to become productive quickly in a TypeScript-first codebase

  • Experience designing APIs, relational data models, and data processing workflows that preserve data quality and behave reliably under real-world conditions

  • Experience building and maintaining frontend features and user interfaces for production web applications, using React or a similar framework

  • Strong software design fundamentals, including system boundaries, failure modes, testing strategies, maintainability, and performance tradeoffs

  • Experience deploying and operating software in a cloud environment such as GCP or AWS

  • Demonstrated judgment in making pragmatic tradeoffs among delivery speed, reliability, maintainability, and the long-term health of the codebase

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a small, cross-functional team

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience at an early-stage startup or in another environment requiring broad ownership and rapid execution

  • Experience building products involving LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, document extraction, or other applied AI capabilities

  • Experience with document-heavy or data-intensive systems, including object storage, search, indexing, ETL, or ingestion pipelines

  • Experience using Python for scientific computing, numerical modeling, data processing, or integrating analytical models into production systems

  • Experience with scientific, environmental, laboratory, industrial, or regulated workflows involving large datasets

  • Experience with GIS, geospatial data, PostGIS, or spatial modeling

  • Familiarity with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, cloud observability, and production monitoring

AI Coding Philosophy

We use AI coding tools to amplify our output, not to replace professional judgment.

We embrace coding agents as a core part of our development process, helping our small team achieve ambitious goals under tight timelines.

As software engineers, we remain actively involved throughout the development process, from framing the problem and shaping the technical approach to guiding implementation, evaluating results, and refining the solution.

We invest in making our development environment agent-friendly and in accumulating the product and technical context needed to guide agent output. This creates compounding improvements in development speed and quality over time, allowing us to deliver business value rapidly while continuing to invest in code quality, sound infrastructure, and the long-term health of our systems.

We take ownership of every system we ship, including both the underlying code and the outcomes delivered to users, regardless of how that code was produced.

Team and Growth

This position reports to the Software Engineering Lead and works closely with scientific, product, operational, and engineering collaborators. You will have direct exposure to the real-world workflows our software supports and meaningful input into the evolution of Remedy’s technical platform.

We're a small team, but we aim to be the best in the world at what we do. You'll be one of our earliest engineers, working shoulder-to-shoulder with company leadership and directly shaping Remedy's technical direction. And the scope isn't limited to the US — we're building a team equipped to take on contaminated land globally.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and level

  • Meaningful equity in an early-stage company

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with company matching
