THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Director, Clinical Research (Oncology) will serve as a Medical Director/Medical Monitor within Oncology Clinical Development, providing medical leadership for ongoing clinical trials and ensuring the safety of patients enrolled across Vir Bio’s oncology studies.

This role will be responsible for medical monitoring activities, clinical decision making, safety oversight, protocol execution, investigator engagement, and cross-functional collaboration throughout the lifecycle of clinical trials. The successful candidate will be an experienced Oncology MD with deep expertise in clinical research, medical monitoring, and oncology drug development across early and late-stage studies.

The role requires a physician leader with a strong track record of serving as a Medical Monitor and Clinical Research Physician, partnering closely with Clinical Operations, Clinical Scientists, Pharmacovigilance, Biometrics, and Regulatory teams to ensure safe, high-quality study execution.

This role is located in our San Francisco headquarters with an expectation of at least 3 days per week in office.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Serve as the lead Medical Monitor and Clinical Research Physician for one or more oncology clinical trials, providing ongoing medical oversight and patient-level clinical decision-making
  • Review and interpret emerging safety and efficacy data, assess adverse events and safety signals, and partner with Pharmacovigilance to support benefit-risk assessments and patient safety
  • Act as the primary medical contact for investigators and study sites, providing guidance on patient eligibility, safety management, protocol implementation, and complex clinical questions
  • Lead medical monitoring activities across Phase 1-3 studies, ensuring high-quality study conduct, data integrity, protocol compliance, and regulatory readiness
  • Contribute to the development of study protocols, amendments, informed consent forms, safety management plans, clinical study reports, and clinical sections of regulatory submissions
  • Partner closely with Clinical Operations, Clinical Scientists, Biometrics, Regulatory, Translational Medicine, and Safety to support study execution, data review, and key development decisions
  • Present clinical findings, safety updates, and study recommendations to internal governance committees, executive leadership, and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies as needed
  • Participate in investigator meetings, safety review committees, advisory boards, and regulatory interactions, serving as a medical expert and representative for assigned programs
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to the continued growth of medical monitoring and clinical development capabilities across the organization

WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU BRING

  • MD required; board certification in Oncology, Hematology/Oncology, or a related specialty strongly preferred
  • 12+ years of clinical research and drug development experience within biotechnology, pharmaceutical, academic, or CRO environments
  • Deep experience serving as a Medical Monitor and Clinical Research Physician within oncology drug development
  • Strong experience managing patient safety oversight and medical monitoring activities across oncology clinical trials
  • Demonstrated expertise supporting Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 oncology studies
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting patient-level safety and efficacy data
  • Strong understanding of oncology clinical trial design, GCP/ICH guidelines, regulatory requirements, and safety reporting obligations
  • Experience collaborating with Pharmacovigilance teams on safety signal detection, safety review committees, and benefit-risk assessments
  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions and health authority interactions preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage investigators, key opinion leaders, and cross-functional teams

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE OFFER

The expected salary range for this position is $235,500 to $329,500 per year. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors.

Vir Biotechnology's compensation and benefits are aligned with the current market and commensurate with the person’s experience and qualifications.
