We are a global team of innovators and pioneers dedicated to shaping the future of observability. At New Relic, we build an intelligent platform that empowers companies to thrive in an AI-first world by giving them unparalleled insight into their complex systems. As we continue to expand our global footprint, we're looking for passionate people to join our mission. If you're ready to help the world's best companies optimize their digital applications, we invite you to explore a career with us!
Your opportunity
At New Relic, we provide our customers real-time insights, so they can innovate faster. Our software delivers insightful observability tools across different technologies and distributed systems, enabling software engineering teams to quickly identify, understand and tackle issues, analyze performance and get the most of their software and infrastructure.
We are seeking a Senior Engineer to help build next-generation Database Observability products. In this high-impact role, you will own the entire lifecycle of critical data flows from developing lightweight database agents and high-throughput ingestion pipelines to building intelligent DB Recommendation engines and autonomous DB AI Agents. You will build cutting-edge capability that moves observability from passive monitoring to automated, AI-driven database diagnostic and remediation workflows.
If you are energized by hard distributed systems problems, extreme scalability, and harnessing agentic AI to solve complex developer challenges, this is a career-defining opportunity to shape the future of intelligent database observability at New Relic. We look forward to talking with you!
What you'll do.
- Architect, develop, and scale high-throughput, low-latency ingestion pipelines and backend services for database metrics, slow query logs, execution plans, and telemetry.
- Develop performant, lightweight agents and collectors to safely extract telemetry and execution stats from diverse relational and NoSQL engines under high load.
- Design and implement intelligent engines that automatically detect slow queries, index fragmentation, schema anti-patterns, and resource exhaustion, delivering actionable optimization recommendations to developers.
- Build state-of-the-art AI agents leveraging Agentic AI, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and LLMs to perform automated root-cause analysis, natural-language database querying, and autonomous incident investigation.
- Write robust backend services and APIs (REST/GraphQL), while collaborating across the stack to connect complex AI diagnostics into crisp, intuitive React/TypeScript workflows.
- Design and maintain event-driven architectures and streaming data flows using Apache Kafka to feed real-time telemetry into ML and AI agent pipelines.
- Own your code from commit to production in a DevOps model while leveraging AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) for spec-driven design, rapid prototyping, and workflow acceleration.
- Conduct code reviews, write unit tests, and ensure the quality and performance.
- Optimize and troubleshoot applications to improve performance, scalability and reliability.
This role requires
- 5+ years of professional experience building and operating production-grade software.
- Mastery of at least one major backend language (Go, Java, or Python), with a solid grasp of concurrency, memory management, and asynchronous distributed systems.
- Deep hands-on experience with both Relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL,Oracle) and NoSQL datastores (Redis, MongoDB, Cassandra).
- Proficient in database management and designing data models that support high throughput and low latency.
- Proven track record of designing high-throughput, fault-tolerant backend architectures and RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
- Rigorous approach to code reviews, automated testing (unit, integration, E2E), and production system observability.
- Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Bonus points if you have
- Familiarity messaging systems, particularly Kafka, and experience implementing real-time data solutions.
- Experience working with OpenTelemetry (OTel).
- Familiarity with GraphQL.
- Experience building database query optimizers, index recommendation tooling, or automated EXPLAIN plan analysis.
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Comfort using AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) in day-to-day development
- Contributions to open-source projects or relevant personal projects showcasing your backend expertise.
- Experience with asynchronous programming techniques: streams, event-based flows, task queues, message queues.
Why Join Us:
- Be part of a forward-thinking team working with cutting-edge technologies in a collaborative environment.
- Access to opportunities for professional growth and development, including mentorship, learning resources, and a culture that encourages continuous improvement.
