Job Description:

Department Overview

At TD, we are transforming how Canadian businesses bank. Our Digital Business Banking team builds and evolves TD’s next-generation platform for Small Business, Commercial, and Corporate clients.

As a Staff Solution Engineer, you will provide hands-on technical leadership for secure, scalable, and resilient digital banking capabilities. You will shape solution direction, guide engineering teams, and help reduce delivery and operational risk across a critical enterprise platform.

What You'll Do

Shape Solution Direction and Technical Strategy

  • Lead solution design for large-scale digital banking capabilities from concept through delivery and production support.

  • Translate business goals into secure, scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective technology solutions.

  • Set technical direction across squads and ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, and operational standards.

Provide Hands-On Engineering Leadership

  • Provide deep technical leadership across modern web, API, microservices, cloud-native, and event-driven architectures.

  • Review designs, code, integration patterns, and implementation approaches to improve quality, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to product, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, operations, and delivery partners.

Deliver Reliable Payments and Banking Capabilities

  • Design and support business-critical capabilities across payments, wire transfers, EFT, bill payments, file transfers, customer servicing, and entitlements.

  • Improve client and colleague experience by increasing platform stability, reducing incident risk, and supporting faster delivery of priority business outcomes.

  • Lead complex production investigations, root cause analysis, and long-term remediation for critical customer-facing services.

Advance Platform Reliability and Observability

  • Strengthen observability, alerting, logging, and service health management across applications, databases, APIs, and integration services.

  • Drive performance tuning, capacity planning, availability improvements, and resiliency engineering for high-volume banking platforms.

  • Promote proactive operational practices, including incident prevention, post-incident learning, service-level objectives, and measurable reliability improvements.

Accelerate Modernization and Innovation

  • Advance modernization through cloud-native platforms, containerization, API-first design, event streaming, automation, and reusable engineering patterns.

  • Champion DevOps, automated testing, Infrastructure as Code, and AI-assisted development to improve delivery speed and engineering quality.

  • Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, reduce technical debt, and improve long-term platform sustainability.

Lead Through Influence and Build Engineering Maturity

  • Mentor engineers and raise the quality of technical design, delivery practices, and production readiness across teams.

  • Influence decisions across product, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, business, and vendor partners without relying on direct reporting authority.

  • Create clear technical guidance, reusable patterns, and practical guardrails that help teams deliver consistently and safely.

Where You'll Work

This role follows TD's hybrid work model. Specific in-office expectations will be discussed during the hiring process.

What You Need to Succeed

Required

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 15+ years of experience designing, delivering, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.

  • Proven experience providing hands-on technical leadership for complex, cross-team technology initiatives.

  • Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, Angular, REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and integration patterns.

  • Experience supporting mission-critical applications in banking, payments, financial services, or another highly regulated industry.

  • Experience with cloud platforms, containers, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices.

  • Experience with event-driven architecture, real-time transaction processing, database design, performance tuning, observability, and production support.

  • Strong understanding of secure design, resiliency, disaster recovery, vulnerability remediation, and operational risk management.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.

Helpful Experience

  • Exposure to technologies such as Azure, Kubernetes/OpenShift, Docker, Kafka, Event Hubs, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, Splunk, Dynatrace, and App Insights.

  • Familiarity with vendor delivery models, and AI-assisted engineering adoption.
