What is the opportunity?
In this role you will support the Managing Counsel and Senior Corporate Counsel, Products and Services Legal Team in providing legal services to achieve the business/operations strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Caribbean Banking, Chief Legal & Administrative Officer Group. Additionally, you will provide legal services to Caribbean Banking on a broad range of enterprise-related matters or specialized areas of law in personal and business banking (including deposit, credit and lending products and services and marketing), and identify, assess and manage legal reputational and regulatory risks.
What will you do?
- Under the supervision of Managing Counsel, drafts, reviews, researches and provides advice on Everyday banking products, mortgages, auto financing, lending products, employee banking programmes and insurance
- Act as principal advisor and subject matter expert in the provision of legal guidance to physical channels
- Provide primary support in relation to Caribbean Banking’s marketing initiatives
- Work collaboratively with Products & Marketing on legal support for Pricing and Everyday Banking Product Risk Assessments
- In concert with other members of the Chief Legal & Administrative Officer Group, wide impact and assist in instituting preventative and recommended legal processes Work with subject matter expert team members providing secondary legal support to the Senior Corporate Counsel and other Caribbean Banking businesses, fostering an environment based on individual responsibility and collaboration to drive a superior client experience, professional excellence and value in particular, Wealth Solutions, Investment products, Investment Management, Business and Product management and on consumer protection investigations
- In concert with other members of the Chief Legal & Administrative Officer Group, Designated Counsel and/or business partners, develops self-service tools and disseminates training
- Work with senior lawyers to monitor/manage legal and regulatory changes and advancements in the ten (10) jurisdictions in which Caribbean Banking operates and to provide secondary support for participation in industry banking associations
- Deliver sound, solution oriented and cost-effective legal advice, demonstrating expert knowledge of areas of legal specialization to the business and functional units on matters advanced for legal guidance
- Partner with Caribbean Banking business partners on allocated projects and other initiatives of critical importance to RBC Caribbean Banking, being aware of their strategic goals and objectives
- Provide any additional assistance or advice to RBC Caribbean Banking, to RBC Chief Legal & Administrative Officer Group and RBC business units as required
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) or equivalent law degree from recognized law school
- Certificate of Legal Education or equivalent qualification
- Admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago
- 4-5 years progressive experience in corporate and commercial law
- Sound knowledge in area of legal and regulatory requirements regarding retail and commercial banking products and services in the Caribbean
- Proven experience in contract law
- Good teamwork skills, client focus and strategy and decision making skills
- Excellent communication skills - written and oral
Nice-to-Have
- Knowledge of law - Demonstrates proficiency in specialized areas of law including insurance, securities, trusts and investment banking matters
- Membership in multiple member jurisdictions of the Council of Legal Education is an asset
