Job Description:

Department Overview 

The AI Office is responsible for accelerating trusted AI at scale by providing enterprise governance, portfolio oversight, value realization, standards, and enabling capabilities. The team partners across Business, Technology, Data, Risk and Control functions to ensure AI initiatives are delivered at pace while operating within TD’s risk appetite.  

Job Description 

The AI Governance Lead is role responsible for enabling and accelerating AI delivery across TD’s Big Rock programs through effective governance, risk orchestration, and cross-functional coordination. Acting as a key connector across lines of defense, the role ensures that AI initiatives move through risk-tiered pathways efficiently while maintaining adherence to enterprise standards, regulatory expectations, and TD's risk appetite.  

This role will help shift AI governance to an enabling model that embeds controls early, removes unnecessary friction, promotes reuse, and supports the safe scaling of AI capabilities across the enterprise.  

 

Accountabilities 

Enterprise AI Governance & Risk Enablement 

  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of TD's first-line AI governance framework supporting Big Rock and enterprise AI initiatives. 

  • Operationalize AI policies, standards, controls, intake processes, risk tiering methodologies, and governance workflows. 

  • Manage risk-proportionate governance pathways that accelerate delivery while maintaining effective oversight. 

  • Ensure governance processes align with TD's AI risk appetite, regulatory obligations, and enterprise risk management practices.  

Big Rock AI Delivery Acceleration 

  • Partner directly with Big Rock Business, Technology, Data and Risk Leads to identify governance bottlenecks and remove barriers to delivery. 

  • Support integrated planning, governance tollgates, approvals, and issue resolution across Big Rock initiatives. 

  • Drive adoption of standardized AI delivery and governance practices to improve speed, transparency, and consistency. 

  • Promote reuse of enterprise platforms, controls, data assets and governance artifacts across programs.  

Cross-Line of Defense Leadership 

  • Act as a liaison between 1LOD delivery teams and 2LOD oversight functions including AI Risk, Model Risk, Data Risk, Privacy, Compliance, Technology Risk, Operational Risk and Legal. 

  • Facilitate effective challenge and escalation processes while preserving clear accountability across lines of defense. 

  • Coordinate responses to emerging regulatory expectations, audit findings, and thematic reviews impacting AI initiatives. 

  • Build strong working relationships with Internal Audit to support independent assurance activities.  

Governance Strategy & Executive Reporting 

  • Develop executive-level reporting on AI governance maturity, risk posture, delivery velocity, issues, exceptions, and value realization. 

  • Prepare materials and recommendations for AI governance forums, executive steering committees, and senior leadership. 

  • Monitor portfolio-wide governance trends and recommend actions to improve delivery outcomes and governance effectiveness. 

  • Support enterprise decision-making through concise, data-driven insights and risk-informed recommendations.  

AI Controls, Standards & Regulatory Readiness 

  • Maintain oversight of enterprise AI governance standards, control requirements, and implementation effectiveness. 

  • Drive consistent application of governance requirements across the AI lifecycle from ideation through production monitoring. 

  • Support readiness for regulatory reviews, independent validation, and internal audits. 

  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure AI governance practices remain scalable, practical and aligned to evolving industry expectations.  

 

Key Skills & Experience 

Experience 

  • 10+ years of experience in governance, risk management, data, analytics, AI, technology, regulatory compliance, or related fields. 

  • Experience operating in a large, regulated financial institution. 

  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise-wide transformation initiatives involving multiple stakeholder groups. 

  • Strong understanding of AI, analytics, data governance, model governance, operational risk and technology governance practices. 

Leadership Capabilities 

  • Exceptional ability to influence without direct authority across diverse stakeholder groups. 

  • Proven ability to balance innovation, delivery speed, and risk management. 

  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills. 

  • Ability to translate complex risk and governance concepts into practical business solutions. 

Technical & Governance Knowledge 

  • Knowledge of AI governance frameworks, risk management principles, model lifecycle management, data governance and responsible AI practices. 

  • Familiarity with regulatory expectations impacting AI and model risk management. 

  • Understanding of three-lines-of-defense operating models and governance structures. 

 

Success Measures 

The successful candidate will be measured on: 

  • Reduction in AI governance and approval cycle times. 

  • Increased adoption of standardized intake and risk-tiering processes. 

  • Percentage of AI initiatives progressing through governance pathways without rework. 

  • Improvement in stakeholder satisfaction across business, technology and control functions. 

  • Timely identification and escalation of material AI risks. 

  • Achievement of Big Rock delivery milestones while remaining within TD's risk appetite. 

  • Maturity and adoption of enterprise AI governance capabilities.
