Senior Designer - Mechanical
The Opportunity
Mineral Technologies, a wholly owned Downer company and global leader in mineral processing solutions, is seeking an experienced Senior Designer Mechanical P&ID to join our Engineering & Projects team.
This is a unique hybrid role that combines P&ID ownership with advanced piping design and 3D modelling capability. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining P&IDs from process intent through to Issue for Construction documentation, while carrying that intent through the 3D piping model, isometrics and fabrication packages.
Working alongside Process Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and multidisciplinary project teams, you will play a critical role in delivering high quality designs for mineral processing projects across Australia and internationally.
This position is ideally suited to a designer who can work independently, apply sound engineering judgement and confidently develop solutions from first principles rather than relying on detailed mark ups.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop P&IDs from process flow diagrams, mass balances and equipment lists
- Own P&ID development throughout the project lifecycle from concept to as built documentation
- Establish and maintain line numbering, equipment tagging and instrument conventions
- Identify and apply specification breaks, isolation philosophy, drains, vents, sample points and service connections
- Develop 3D piping models in AutoCAD Plant 3D
- Produce general arrangements, isometrics, support drawings and material take offs
- Coordinate clash detection and multidisciplinary design reviews
- Lead P&ID squad checks and technical quality reviews
- Support capability development across the drafting and design team
- Apply safety in design principles to ensure maintainable, operable and safe plant designs
What We're Looking For
To be successful in this role, you will bring extensive experience in process plant design drafting with a strong focus on P&ID development and piping design.
You will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Take a flowsheet and mass balance and develop a first pass P&ID that requires review rather than complete redevelopment
- Define and justify specification breaks and understand the impact of incorrect placement
- Build and manage line numbering systems across large and complex projects
- Interpret instrument tags and understand complete control loop requirements
- Route slurry pipelines with consideration for velocity, wear, maintenance, drainage and flushing requirements
- Configure and manage AutoCAD Plant 3D projects including specifications, catalogues, class definitions and validation rules
- Deliver piping designs from P&ID through to fabrication ready drawing packages
- Identify maintainability, drainage and isolation issues within mineral processing circuits
You will also possess:
- Trade qualification, Advanced Diploma or associate degree in drafting, design or a related engineering discipline
- 10+ years' experience in process plant design drafting
- Minimum 5 years' experience producing P&IDs as a primary deliverable
- Demonstrated ownership of P&ID development on major projects
- Advanced AutoCAD Plant 3D capabilities across both P&ID and piping disciplines
- Experience within mining, mineral processing or heavy industrial environments
- Strong understanding of ISA 5.1 tagging standards and recognised P&ID conventions
- Experience using smart P&ID systems and associated databases
- Knowledge of Autodesk Construction Cloud environments
