Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas is seeking an Academic Acute Care Surgeon to join our nationally recognized trauma program. This faculty position is ideal for surgeons who thrive in a high-acuity environment and enjoy practicing the full breadth of Acute Care Surgery while teaching the next generation of physicians.

Unlike many trauma programs that separate trauma and emergency general surgery into different services, our faculty practice the complete spectrum of Acute Care Surgery.

Your practice will include:

  • Level I Trauma Surgery
  • Surgical Critical Care
  • Emergency General Surgery
  • Burn Surgery coverage
  • Resident and medical student education
  • Research and scholarly activity

This broad clinical practice allows surgeons to maintain operative diversity while practicing alongside nationally recognized faculty dedicated to outstanding patient care and academic excellence.

Clinical Practice

Faculty provide comprehensive care for patients with traumatic injuries and emergency surgical conditions including:

  • Blunt and penetrating trauma
  • Emergency exploratory laparotomy
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Acute appendicitis
  • Acute cholecystitis
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Surgical ICU management

As part of our regional burn program, faculty also participate in overnight burn coverage, including:

  • Initial burn evaluation
  • Burn resuscitation
  • Initial debridement
  • Escharotomy when indicated

Prior burn experience is welcomed but not required. Faculty receive mentorship and training to become comfortable managing these responsibilities.

Academic Responsibilities

Faculty members actively participate in:

  • Teaching General Surgery residents
  • Educating medical students
  • Mentoring PA and NP students
  • Research and publications
  • National presentations
  • Quality improvement
  • Academic leadership opportunities

Call Responsibilities

Faculty rotate through:

  • Trauma call
  • Surgical ICU attending weeks
  • Emergency General Surgery coverage
  • Burn call coverage

Qualifications

Required

  • MD or DO
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible
  • Eligible for Texas medical licensure

What minimum requirements you’ll need

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • Licensed Physician MD/DO credentialed from the Texas Medical Board obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) required.
