Systems Administrator

Location: Scottsdale or Phoenix, AZ
Salary Range: $85,000–$110,000 annually

About the Role

Atwell is looking for an experienced Systems Administrator to support the infrastructure behind our growing national organization. Depending on experience and technical depth, this position may be filled at the Senior Systems Administrator level.

This role will be based in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area and will provide important West Coast infrastructure coverage for Atwell’s Technology organization.

You’ll work across Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, VMware, storage, backup, monitoring, networking, and automation technologies. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of complex infrastructure issues, digging deeply into technical problems, and working independently to keep systems secure, reliable, and available.

For more experienced candidates, there will also be opportunities to lead infrastructure projects, help establish technical standards, mentor other Technology team members, and play a larger role in the design and evolution of Atwell’s environment.

What You’ll Do

Systems Administration

  • Build, configure, maintain, patch, upgrade, and troubleshoot Windows Server environments.

  • Administer Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and related Windows infrastructure services.

  • Support Microsoft 365 and hybrid identity services.

  • Manage user, service, system, group, and administrative access in accordance with established security standards.

  • Support certificate services, PKI, and related infrastructure where applicable.

  • Develop and maintain standardized operating system deployments and software packages.

Virtualization & Infrastructure

  • Administer VMware vCenter and ESXi environments.

  • Build, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and retire virtual machines.

  • Support VMware virtual networking and related infrastructure.

  • Monitor host and virtual machine health, performance, capacity, and availability.

  • Assist with infrastructure upgrades, migrations, lifecycle planning, and technology refresh initiatives.

Storage & Backup

  • Administer SAN, NAS, and enterprise storage environments.

  • Manage NTFS and share permissions, DFS, FSRM, and distributed file systems.

  • Monitor storage utilization, capacity, performance, and system health.

  • Configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain enterprise backup platforms such as Veeam, Backup Exec, ViceVersa, or similar solutions.

  • Perform file restores, recovery testing, archiving, and backup validation.

Monitoring & Automation

  • Monitor infrastructure health through VMware, SNMP, RMM, hardware monitoring, backup, and related platforms.

  • Investigate system alerts, logs, failed jobs, performance issues, and infrastructure events.

  • Deploy and configure monitoring agents, alerts, software packages, and automation.

  • Build and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate repetitive tasks, improve consistency, and reduce manual administration.

  • Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, performance, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Networking & Security

  • Support infrastructure networking including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, switching, virtual networking, and connectivity troubleshooting.

  • Work closely with Network Administration on issues that cross server, virtualization, storage, and networking environments.

  • Apply approved security baselines, operating system patches, and configuration standards.

  • Support vulnerability remediation, audit requests, security investigations, access reviews, and recovery testing.

  • Maintain systems according to least-privilege and established security practices.

Projects & Operations

  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and escalated end-user issues involving systems, accounts, hardware, software, workstations, printers, and related technologies.

  • Participate in infrastructure projects, technology integrations, office openings, acquisitions, relocations, migrations, and system upgrades.

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, standard operating procedures, configuration information, and knowledge articles.

  • Communicate project status, risks, dependencies, and technical recommendations to Technology leadership and stakeholders.

  • Partner with other Technology teams and vendors to troubleshoot issues and implement solutions.

  • Travel to Atwell offices when needed to support technology infrastructure.

  • Participate in after-hours maintenance and critical incident response as required.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related technical role.

  • Strong experience administering Windows Server and Active Directory environments.

  • Hands-on experience with VMware vCenter, ESXi, and virtual machines.

  • Experience supporting enterprise backup and recovery technologies.

  • Experience managing enterprise storage, permissions, and distributed file systems.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Windows environments.

  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, VLANs, and virtual networking.

  • Experience using PowerShell for scripting, automation, or administrative tasks.

  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills with the ability to investigate complex issues across multiple infrastructure layers.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing technical issues, and take ownership through resolution.

  • Strong documentation and communication skills.

Senior-Level Consideration

Candidates may be considered for the Senior Systems Administrator level based on the depth and breadth of their experience.

Senior-level candidates will typically bring:

  • 7+ years of progressive systems administration or infrastructure experience.

  • Advanced expertise across Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualization, storage, backup, networking, and infrastructure monitoring.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently own complex infrastructure environments and escalated technical issues.

  • Experience leading infrastructure projects, upgrades, integrations, or migrations.

  • Strong PowerShell scripting and infrastructure automation experience.

  • Experience establishing standards, improving processes, or recommending infrastructure architecture changes.

  • Ability to mentor other Technology team members and serve as a technical escalation point.

  • Experience supporting complex, distributed, multi-location enterprise environments.

Preferred Qualifications
