A Role for a Vet Who Enjoys Farm Practice at Its Best
For many farm animal veterinarians, the most rewarding part of the job is building trusted relationships with farmers, supporting herd health and spending time out on the road working directly with livestock.
At Gorey Veterinary Hospital, we're seeking an experienced Large Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician who is passionate about farm practice and enjoys providing practical, proactive veterinary support to the farming community.
We are currently in an exciting phase of development, having invested heavily in our facilities, equipment and team. As we continue to grow, we're looking for experienced clinicians who can confidently contribute to our farm service while helping shape the next stage of the practice's evolution.
A Farm-Focused Role with Strong Client Relationships
This role is primarily centred around large animal practice, providing a varied and rewarding caseload across beef, dairy and sheep enterprises throughout the region.
You'll play an important role in building lasting relationships with farmers, providing preventative healthcare advice, supporting herd health initiatives, performing routine farm visits and delivering practical solutions that directly benefit both livestock and farming businesses.
The successful candidate will enjoy working independently, feel comfortable handling cattle and sheep, and appreciate the unique satisfaction that comes from becoming a trusted adviser to agricultural clients.
An Opportunity to Grow with the Practice
As Gorey Veterinary Hospital continues to invest in its future, we're committed to growing and strengthening our large animal services.
You'll be joining a collaborative team that values professional expertise, practical thinking and excellent client service. This is an opportunity to become a key contributor within a progressive rural practice and play an active role in its continued development.
Confidence and Experience Required
This is not a position for new graduates.
We're looking for an experienced veterinary surgeon who is confident in first-opinion farm animal medicine and surgery, whilst also being capable of working independently across routine large animal responsibilities.
Applicants must be certified to carry out TB testing and should possess practical experience handling cattle and sheep in a range of farm environments.
The role will also involve participation in small animal out-of-hours cover when required. Previous companion animal experience is beneficial, but additional support and training can be provided to ensure confidence with these responsibilities.
Flexibility That Fits Around the Right Person
We recognise that every veterinarian's ideal working pattern looks different, and we're keen to build a role around the right person rather than asking candidates to fit into a rigid schedule.
As a guide, our full-time vets typically work an average of 40 hours per week across a combination of weekday shifts between 8:30am and 5:30pm and 10:30am and 7:30pm.
We are happy to discuss full-time, part-time and flexible working arrangements, and welcome conversations around alternative schedules that support both your professional ambitions and personal commitments.
To ensure a fair and sustainable rota for the entire team, participation in our 1 in 6 Saturday rota and 1 in 6 weekend on-call rota is a requirement of the role, including for those working part-time or flexible contracts. Saturday clinics run from 9:00am to 2:30pm, with a half day of TOIL provided, while a full day of TOIL follows an on-call weekend.
Importantly, the practice is not open to the public on Sundays or Bank Holidays, and our out-of-hours service is shared with a neighbouring veterinary practice, helping to distribute workload and support a healthy work-life balance for the team.
Why Wexford?
County Wexford offers some of Ireland's finest countryside, coastline and farming communities.
With a strong agricultural heritage, welcoming local communities and an exceptional quality of life, it provides an ideal location for veterinarians who enjoy rural practice while still benefiting from excellent transport links and modern amenities.
Who We're Looking For
We're seeking a VCI-registered Veterinary Surgeon with large animal clinical experience and current TB testing certification.
You'll enjoy working with farmers, be confident handling cattle and sheep, and possess the clinical competence to manage routine farm animal work independently. Strong communication skills, a practical approach and a commitment to excellent client care will be key to success in this position.
