Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Lead provides operational leadership and coordination of daily pharmacy technician activities across multiple pharmacy practice areas. This position oversees workflow management, staff support, operational continuity, and compliance initiatives while ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient delivery of medication services. The Pharmacy Technician Lead serves as a liaison between pharmacy technicians and pharmacy leadership, promotes medication safety, supports employee development, and advances departmental quality improvement initiatives. This role maintains proficiency in advanced pharmacy practice areas and provides operational coverage as needed to support departmental performance and strategic objectives.

Essential Functions

• Coordinates daily pharmacy technician workflow, including workload distribution, task prioritization, staff assignments, and shift coverage.

• Serves as the primary operational resource for pharmacy technician staff and facilitates effective communication between shifts and practice areas.

• Monitors completion, accuracy, and timeliness of pharmacy technician responsibilities to ensure compliance with departmental procedures and quality standards.

• Provides real-time coaching, support, and guidance to pharmacy technicians to ensure safe and effective pharmacy operations.

• Maintains proficiency in all advanced pharmacy technician functions and provides operational coverage across pharmacy practice areas as needed.

• Performs advanced pharmacy technician duties involving medication preparation, sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, inventory management, controlled substance processes, and medication distribution activities.

• Supports continuity of pharmacy operations by coordinating shift handoffs and monitoring adherence to staffing plans and assignments.

• Serves as a liaison between pharmacy technicians and pharmacy leadership by communicating operational needs, concerns, recommendations, and performance opportunities.

• Develops, implements, and reinforces operational procedures, workflow standards, and best practices to promote safety, quality, and efficiency.

• Supports technician onboarding, orientation, training, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development activities.

• Identifies training opportunities and assists with workforce development, career progression, and succession planning initiatives.

• Mentors pharmacy technicians and serves as a role model for professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and customer service.

• Participates in departmental quality improvement projects, operational audits, workflow analysis, and performance monitoring activities.

• Identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiency, service quality, medication safety, and customer satisfaction.

• Supports pharmacy compliance initiatives and maintains readiness for regulatory inspections, audits, and accreditation surveys.

• Monitors systems, workflows, and operational processes to identify and mitigate risks that may impact medication safety or service quality.

• Collaborates with pharmacy leadership, pharmacists, clinical teams, information technology, compliance, and operational departments on cross-functional initiatives.

• Supports practice advancement, innovation, research, shared governance, committee participation, and professional development activities.

• Partners with Pharmacy Technician Specialists and other team members to support strategic initiatives and service line improvements.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Advanced knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication distribution systems, and pharmacy technician practice standards.

• Knowledge of sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, controlled substance management, and medication safety practices.

• Knowledge of pharmacy regulations, accreditation requirements, compliance standards, and quality assurance principles.

• Ability to lead day-to-day pharmacy technician operations and coordinate workflow across multiple service areas.

• Ability to train, mentor, coach, and develop pharmacy technicians.

• Strong leadership, organizational, and team-building skills.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to changing operational needs.

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.

• Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Field of Study

• Healthcare, Pharmacy Technology, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Work Experience

• Three years of experience within an integrated healthcare system consisting of three or more hospitals required.

• Three years of contemporary hospital pharmacy experience required.

• Previous experience in pharmacy operations leadership, technician training, workflow coordination, or advanced pharmacy practice areas preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) required.

• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) required.
