Purpose of the Role
BGIS is seeking an experienced Financial Accountant to play a key role in delivering accurate financial accounting, reporting, compliance, and financial control activities across our New Zealand business.
Reporting directly to the APAC Finance Manager in Sydney, you will work collaboratively with business leaders, Project Managers, operational stakeholders, and the wider finance team. You will support project accounting, budgeting and forecasting, maintain the integrity of financial records and balance sheet reconciliations, and provide meaningful financial insights to support informed business decisions.
You will also contribute to project and business performance, ensure compliance with regulatory and internal control requirements, and support the continuous improvement of finance processes, systems, and reporting.
The ideal candidate will be proactive, organised, commercially aware, and comfortable managing competing priorities. You will bring strong attention to detail, sound professional judgement, and the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Own month-end close activities, including the preparation of financial reports, supporting schedules, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with applicable accounting standards, company policies, internal controls, and audit requirements.
- Manage bank and credit card reconciliations.
- Process supplier invoices, payment runs, employee expense claims, and reimbursements.
- Provide technical accounting support and guidance relating to accounting standards, financial controls, and compliance requirements.
- Assist with external audits, audit requests, control testing, and compliance reporting.
- Support compliance with taxation, statutory, and regulatory obligations.
- Partner with Project Managers and operational stakeholders to monitor project financial performance, budgets, and forecasts.
- Support project forecasting, margin analysis, management reporting, and financial performance analysis.
- Ensure accurate project billing, including progress claims and final invoicing.
- Support the administration of project management and financial systems, including project setup, billing, and reporting.
- Drive continuous improvement across accounting processes, financial reporting, and finance systems.
- Support automation initiatives and process standardisation across the Finance function.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with operational teams, suppliers, auditors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Education, Experience & Skills
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CA or CPA qualification, or currently working towards completion.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in a financial accounting, management accounting, or project accounting role.
- Solid experience in financial accounting, reporting, and project accounting.
- Experience with project-based billing, project cost tracking, and financial analysis.
- Strong understanding of accounting standards, financial controls, and compliance requirements.
- Experience preparing forecasts, budgets, and financial reporting packs.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with financial systems.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of an organisation.
- High attention to detail, with strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership, manage competing priorities, and meet reporting obligations.
Desirable
- Experience using project management and global ERP systems.
- Demonstrated experience improving accounting processes, reporting, or financial systems.
- Experience supporting automation or finance process-standardisation initiatives.
- Previous experience working within a project-based, facilities management, construction, property, or service-delivery environment.
- Exposure to working with regional or international finance teams.
Workplace Flexibility
This position will initially be based at the BGIS office in Auckland to support onboarding, collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and successful integration into the Finance function.
Following successful onboarding and demonstrated performance, there may be an opportunity to discuss a flexible working arrangement, subject to business requirements and manager approval.
