Job Description Summary

The CMA serves in a working clinical support role for physicians. Responsible for assisting physicians and nurses with patient care. Responsible for patient check-in, registration and check out processes for new and established patients. Schedule appointments and assist all patients and visitors with questions, concerns and issues.

Job Description

Essential Functions

1. Schedule appointments, greet, check-in and check-out all visitors and patients.

2. Collect appropriate deposits and co-pay amounts at registration and/or check out.

3. Responsible for patient work-up, vital signs, and H & P if necessary.

4. Prepare medication listing for physician. Reviews listing at each visit to ensure accuracy.

5. Assists physicians with patients and office procedures.

6. Update and review patient medication listing for accuracy.

7. Retrieves radiology reports from various diagnostic centers and hospital.

8. Review charts to ensure proper documents are available for physician to review at the time of patient’s appointment.

9. Contact referring physician’s offices to obtain proper documents prior to patient appointment when necessary.

10. Contact patients after missed appointments, reschedule, and send appointment letters.

11. Complete disability forms.

12. Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physician.

13. Remove and change patient dressings.

14. File patient charts and other documents/papers as necessary.

15. Ensures all HIPAA and required paperwork is correct and on each patient’s chart.

16. Ensure all equipment is “off” at end of each workday.

17. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, and hear; close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less). May be exposed to blood, body fluids or tissue as defined by Blood Borne Pathogen Control Plan. Must be able to lift and carry up to 24 pounds occasionally.

Mental Requirements

Able to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations, write reports, correspondence and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees and medical staff. Must be able to interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Population Served

This position primarily interacts with adults and aging adults and provides patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Additional Job Description

High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience preferred. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
