Job Description

The Campus Public Safety Officer is responsible for preserving a safe, secure, and welcoming environment throughout Minneapolis College by protecting people, property, and the educational mission of the College.

Campus Public Safety Officers patrol college facilities, respond to emergencies, investigate incidents, provide exceptional customer service, foster positive relationships with the campus community, and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and local emergency responders to promote a culture of safety.

This position requires professionalism, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. While most situations are resolved through communication, customer service, and de-escalation, officers must also be prepared to respond to rapidly evolving emergencies that may require physical intervention to protect others, maintain public safety, or lawfully detain individuals consistent with Minnesota law and department policy.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build positive relationships with students, employees, and visitors by providing information, directions, safe walks, and general assistance with professionalism and respect.

  • Promote community-oriented public safety through proactive engagement, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and de-escalation.

  • Conduct visible foot and vehicle patrols of campus buildings, grounds, parking areas, and other college property to deter crime and identify safety concerns.

  • Perform building access procedures and monitor surveillance cameras, alarms, emergency communication systems, and access control systems.

  • Respond to medical emergencies, criminal incidents, suspicious activity, fire alarms, behavioral crises, hazardous conditions, and other calls for service.

  • Coordinate with police, fire, emergency medical services, and campus partners during emergencies, evacuations, sheltering operations, and critical incidents.

  • Conduct preliminary investigations, interview involved parties and witnesses, review available evidence, and accurately document findings.

  • Complete thorough and timely incident reports and other required documentation using department records management systems.

  • Provide work direction and mentorship to Student Safety Monitors and participate in training, emergency exercises, professional development, and departmental safety initiatives.

Correct Salary Range:

$23.61 - $32.54 hourly

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Security Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer.  

  • Associate's degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience; Bachelor’s degree in above areas may substitute for 2 years of experience 

  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Ability to Interpret laws, regulations and policies.

  • Knowledge of loss-prevention techniques.

Preferred Qualification 

  • Higher education public safety, community-oriented policing, or emergency management.

  • Crisis intervention, behavioral threat assessment, conflict resolution, or de-escalation.

  • Investigations, incident documentation, and professional report writing.

  • Security technology, including access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, emergency notification, computer-aided dispatch, or records management systems.

  • Providing effective customer service and working collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities.

Physical Requirements

  • Move throughout multiple campus buildings, parking facilities, grounds, and surrounding college property for extended periods.

  • Maintain a stationary position for extended periods while monitoring assigned areas, security systems, or campus activities.

  • Frequently ascend and descend stairs and move promptly between campus locations when responding to calls for service.

  • Transport, position, and deploy emergency-response equipment and supplies.

  • Assist injured individuals and others requiring mobility or evacuation assistance during emergencies.

  • Perform assigned duties outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions throughout the year.

  • Maintain situational awareness and perceive, assess, and respond to safety hazards and rapidly changing conditions.

  • Safely perform the physical functions included in required defensive-tactics and officer-safety training, including physically intervening to protect individuals or property and controlling or restraining resistant individuals when legally authorized and consistent with department policy.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to pass FBI/BCA background check free from convictions and/or misdemeanor violations. 

  • Must be able to move through buildings and for long distances. 

  • Former and/or current employees must be in good standing with Minneapolis College.

  • In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
