Position Summary

Fairwinds Technologies is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support an AWACS Radio System Upgrade (RSU) Program. This role will lead mechanical and structural integration efforts associated with modernization of the E-767 AWACS fleet, including installation of next-generation communications and avionics systems.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience supporting military aircraft modifications, avionics integration, structural analysis, airworthiness certification, and aircraft system testing within aerospace or defense programs.

This is a supervisory position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and aircraft integration activities for avionics, communications, and mission system upgrades.
  • Design aircraft modifications including equipment installations, mounting provisions, racks, cabinets, and support structures.
  • Perform structural assessments, stress analyses, and substantiation of aircraft modifications.
  • Support thermal, environmental, weight and balance, and airworthiness qualification activities in accordance with military and aerospace standards.
  • Develop and review engineering drawings, CAD models, installation packages, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in Systems Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and certification activities.
  • Collaborate with government customers, Boeing, subcontractors, and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure successful program execution.
  • Lead mechanical design activities supporting installation of new avionics, communications, and mission system equipment.
  • Evaluate impacts of new avionics systems on existing aircraft structures and subsystems.
  • Support military airworthiness certification activities and participate in certification working groups and government technical reviews.
  • Support System Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), Test Readiness Reviews (TRR), and Configuration Audits (FCA/PCA).
  • Provide engineering recommendations to program leadership and government stakeholders.
  • Provide on-site engineering support during aircraft modification and installation.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • ABET-accredited degree preferred.

Experience

  • 9+ years of engineering experience in aerospace or defense programs.
  • 5+ years supporting aircraft avionics integration and aircraft modification programs.
  • Strong CAD experience using.
  • Experience supporting design, installation, test, certification, and fielding of aircraft modifications.
  • Experience with communications and avionics upgrades, including radio system integration.
  • Strong knowledge of aircraft structures, systems integration, airworthiness, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience with AWACS, ISR, C2, airborne communications, or large aircraft mission systems.
  • Familiarity with ARC-210 radio systems, SATURN waveforms, RF communication systems, Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI), TEMPEST requirements, and E3 requirements.

Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location and experience.
