About us

Edison Scientific builds and deploys AI scientist agents to accelerate science and the development of new medicines. We are an ambitious team run by scientists and engineers from leading institutions across biology, physics, chemistry, and AI.

The Role

As an engineering manager, you'll play a key role in leading and scaling the people and technology powering our autonomous scientific discovery platform.

You’ll lead our product application team. This team owns the frontend and backend stack powering our user experience with Edison’s platform. You will partner with scientists, product managers, and designers to solve complex UX challenges inherent to scientific agents. These challenges span representing new information hierarchies, supporting multi-user collaboration with agents, persisting agent states across runtimes, managing access to agent and user-created assets, and supporting a growing list of communication modalities. Your team will own both the API experience used by agents and automations as well as the UI that scientists interact with daily. This high-impact leadership role reports to the Head of Engineering.

Our mission is to build an AI scientist to cure human diseases, and you'll lead the implementation and design of the core product that achieves this goal. This role will influence architecture, operations, and growth of our product engineering team. You will help mentor junior engineers and enable senior engineers to build world-class software.

This role is on-site at our San Francisco office in the Dogpatch neighborhood. Our office is a converted warehouse with high ceilings, open space, and a team that genuinely believes in what they're building.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow our product engineering team, owning mentorship, career development, and the hiring pipeline as we scale from four to ten engineers by end of year.

  • Partner with our product and research teams to bring state of the art features into production.

  • Set the technical strategy for our AI product platform, focusing on engineering quality and velocity.

  • Diagnose and solve challenges that our scientists face in using our platform for discoveries.

  • Own technical decision making surrounding our API and UI layers.

  • Manage cross-functional communication and planning between engineering teams and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience managing an engineering team and leading cross-functional initiatives.

  • Prior experience working as a product engineer at a high-velocity, engineering-focused organization.

  • Hands-on fullstack proficiency: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, modern frontend frameworks, and infrastructure tooling.

  • Deep familiarity with systems and API design, product thinking, and operating applications in production.

  • Strong understanding of systems architecture including distributed systems, data modeling, and cloud infrastructure.

Bonus points for

  • Experience with AI applications or scientific computing solutions.

  • Prior experience in startups or small teams with significant architectural ownership and ambiguity.

  • Experience scaling systems, teams, or platforms through periods of rapid growth.
