Position Summary

Trinity Health Oakland Hospital is seeking compassionate, customer-focused Hospital Transporters to join our Patient Transportation team. In this vital role, you will safely transport patients throughout the hospital while providing exceptional service, ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety at all times.

As a Hospital Transporter, you will serve as an important member of the care team, collaborating with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to support efficient patient flow and deliver an outstanding patient experience consistent with Trinity Health's Mission and Values.

What You'll Do

Patient Transportation & Safety

  • Safely transport patients to and from various hospital departments, treatment areas, testing locations, and patient care units in a timely and professional manner.
  • Prioritize transport requests according to patient care needs and departmental guidelines.
  • Verify patient identity and destination before transport using established patient identification procedures.
  • Assist with patient transfers using appropriate body mechanics and safety protocols.
  • Secure patients appropriately in wheelchairs, stretchers, and other transportation equipment.
  • Transport and manage related medical equipment and supplies, including:
    • Oxygen tanks
    • Chest tubes
    • Foley bags
    • Medication pumps
    • Other patient care equipment

Customer Service & Communication

  • Greet patients, families, and visitors with courtesy, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Explain the purpose of transport and help ensure patient comfort during transit.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing units, clinical staff, patients, and family members regarding transport status and patient handoffs.
  • Answer questions within the scope of the role and direct concerns to appropriate healthcare team members when necessary.

Equipment & Operational Excellence

  • Perform routine visual inspections of transportation equipment for safety and functionality.
  • Clean and maintain wheelchairs, stretchers, and other transport equipment according to department standards.
  • Promptly report defective, damaged, or unsafe equipment.
  • Return equipment to designated storage locations after use.
  • Complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Maintain departmental productivity and service standards.

Patient Care & Compliance

  • Follow infection prevention, isolation, and safety protocols at all times.
  • Recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately within the scope of training.
  • Support emergency response activities when needed.
  • Comply with all Trinity Health policies, procedures, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate behaviors aligned with Trinity Health's Mission, Vision, and Core Values.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Certifications

  • Current Heartsaver CPR Certification required (or ability to obtain within designated timeframe according to hospital policy).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous patient transport, healthcare, hospitality, or customer service experience preferred.
  • Prior hospital patient transportation experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 100% of the workday.
  • Ability to push and pull patient transportation equipment weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, lifting, reaching, and transferring of patients using proper body mechanics.
  • Ability to safely maneuver patients and equipment throughout the hospital environment.
