Job Accountabilities:
As Counsel, you will work as part of a team to provide ongoing support and legal advice primarily to Everyday Banking, Savings & Investing (ESI) within the Canadian Personal Bank. This includes:
Providing legal support for change initiatives involving personal deposit accounts, overdraft protection, digital banking and other day-to-day banking products and services;
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts with third parties, terms of use, customer agreements, and related collateral;
Participating in the product development process, issue-spotting and liaising with subject-matter experts (internal and external) to guide relevant TD business segments to workable solutions;
Reviewing internal and external materials for relevant TD business segments, including disclosures, contracts, policies, customer communications and marketing materials;
Advising on compliance with federal and provincial legislative/regulatory requirements, including consumer provisions within the Bank Act and related codes/commitments;
Reviewing and advocating on legislative developments, including through industry forums;
Applying expertise and thinking creatively to address unique or novel matters and working collaboratively with colleagues across business lines and corporate functions to help identify and prevent future legal and regulatory risks;
Contributing to colleague development within the Legal Department by discussing emerging legal and business issues;
Staying up-to-date on legal issues affecting your areas of responsibility, including by attending external presentations and liaising with contacts within the industry, law firms, and professional associations as appropriate;
Working collaboratively with other members of TD Legal to deliver the highest quality of service;
Contributing to high-priority TD Legal Department initiatives, including knowledge management and workflow improvement; and
Broader work or accountabilities that may be assigned as needed.
Job Requirements:
Licensed to practice law in Ontario.
Minimum 3 years of experience practicing law in Canada.
Experience advising on Bank Act requirements as they relate to retail banking products.
Knowledge of financial services and consumer protection laws would be an asset.
Strong analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills and ability to provide advice in a clear, concise and time-sensitive manner, in both legal and business settings.
Strong organization skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Ability to think critically and make risk-based decisions.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Ability to interact and effectively advise senior officers within TD.
Ability to be “solutions-oriented”, have excellent business and legal judgment and an aptitude for working effectively on cross-functional teams.
Ability to stay energized, productive and focused in the face of challenges, ambiguity, change or strenuous demands, including the ability to create a supportive environment that helps others become more resilient and productive.
Ability to create a welcoming environment that encourages different perspectives and new ideas, build a culture of curiosity, openness, and creativity across the organization and the wider community.
Ability to work effectively with external counsel.
Comfort being a generalist who can learn and apply principles from different areas of law, spot legal issues, and coordinate advice from other lawyers as needed.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with business partners, risk and control partners, and lawyers across the Legal Department.
