Via is using technology to transform transportation around the world. From changing a single person’s daily commute to reducing humanity’s collective environmental footprint — we’ve got huge goals.x
As a Mechanic (Class A) on Via's Operations team, you'll be hands-on every day - diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the buses and support vehicles that keep our transit service running. This is a technical, floor-focused role for someone who takes pride in getting under the hood, solving problems the right way the first time, and keeping a fleet on the road safely and reliably.
This is an in-person position with the expectation that you will be on-site 5 days per week. While standard schedules are provided, this role does require flexibility to work occasional evenings, Saturdays, and extended hours as business needs arise.
What You'll Do:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on & transit vehicles, and support equipment, including fluid changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, tire rotations, and scheduled service intervals
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues across engines, transmissions, braking systems, HVAC, suspension, steering, and electrical systems.
- Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and DOT-compliant safety inspections, identifying defects and completing repairs in line with regulatory and manufacturer standards.
- Respond to road calls and in-service breakdowns, troubleshooting issues on-site and coordinating with the Maintenance Manager to minimize service disruption.
- Use automotive test equipment, diagnostic software, and manufacturer diagrams to isolate issues and verify repairs.
- Complete accurate work orders and maintain detailed service records for each vehicle, including labor, parts used, and root-cause notes.
- Keep the shop and work areas clean, organized, and safe: tools returned, fluids stored properly, and hazards addressed before they become issues.
Who You Are:
- Vocational automotive training and hands-on experience in medium/heavy-duty vehicle maintenance
- Hands-on problem solver who enjoys working on the floor, not behind a desk.
- Comfortable reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Proficient with diagnostic tools and comfortable learning new maintenance software.
- Detail-oriented with documentation - work orders are closed out cleanly, records are accurate, and the next shift knows exactly what happened.
- Comfortable with physical work, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working in varied shop conditions.
Licenses and Certification Requirements:
- Hold a valid driver's license.
- Class A Mechanic preferred
- Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- At least 21 years old.
- Successful completion of mandatory pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and motor vehicle records check.
- Pass a drug screening and background check: no felonies, clean MVR, no DUI/DWI or reckless driving convictions, and no more than 2 speeding tickets.
- Able to pass a pre-employment physical.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience, knowledge, and skills. Salary reflected does not include equity or variable pay, where applicable.
- Hourly Rate: $25-30 per hour.
- We are proud to offer a generous and comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health and retirement benefits.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
