Certified Expressive Therapist – PRN Weekends Days

Location: AdventHealth Shawnee Mission

Schedule: PRN | Weekend Days

The Certified Expressive Therapist provides therapeutic services as a member of the Behavioral Health Expressive Therapy Team. This role plans and facilitates therapeutic group and individual interventions, completes comprehensive expressive therapy assessments, collaborates with the interdisciplinary treatment team, and promotes patient engagement through evidence-based expressive therapy modalities. The Expressive Therapist contributes to individualized treatment planning while ensuring services are delivered safely, effectively, and in accordance with AdventHealth policies and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate group and individual expressive therapy sessions that align with each patient's individualized treatment plan.

  • Conduct comprehensive Expressive Therapy Assessments for newly admitted patients to determine therapeutic needs and establish treatment recommendations.

  • Assess patients' physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial status to determine participation in therapeutic programming.

  • Develop, implement, and modify individualized treatment goals, interventions, and therapeutic activities based on patient progress.

  • Document patient participation, progress, and therapeutic outcomes accurately and within established timeframes following each group and individual session.

  • Provide timely progress updates and therapeutic recommendations to the interdisciplinary treatment team to support coordinated patient care.

  • Encourage and motivate patients to actively participate in expressive therapy and other therapeutic programming.

  • Develop clinical impressions and complete documentation in accordance with Behavioral Health policies, Joint Commission/DNV standards, and CMS regulations.

  • Participate in crisis intervention, individual counseling, therapeutic observation, and patient rounds as part of the behavioral health treatment team.

  • Identify, monitor, and safely supervise therapeutic materials to minimize risk for patients with self-harm or safety concerns.

  • Maintain professional and ethical standards consistent with the applicable therapy discipline.

  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain current clinical knowledge and best practices.

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of inpatient behavioral health and intensive outpatient treatment programs

  • Knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses, behavioral health treatment approaches, and therapeutic interventions

  • Ability to develop and facilitate therapeutic group and individual expressive therapy sessions

  • Strong patient-centered approach with the ability to build trust and therapeutic rapport

  • Understanding of therapeutic boundaries and the ability to appropriately manage transference within the therapeutic relationship

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and behavioral health safety practices

  • Ability to assess patients' physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial functioning

  • Strong interdisciplinary collaboration and communication skills

  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic documentation skills

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in conversational English

  • Commitment to ethical practice, professional development, and evidence-based care


Education

  • Bachelor's Degree — Required

  • Master's Degree — Preferred

Field of Study

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Art Therapy

  • Music Therapy

  • Recreational Therapy

  • Activity Therapy or a closely related therapeutic discipline.

Experience

  • One year of experience working with psychiatric, behavioral health, physical rehabilitation, medical patients, or related therapeutic populations — Required

  • Two or more years of related experience — Preferred

Licensure & Certifications

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) /OR/ Occupational Therapist (OT) — Preferred

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) — Preferred

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification — Preferred

  • Formal de-escalation training preferred.

Pay Range:

$21.82 - $40.59
