About the team

You will be joining Atlas, our Continuous Engineering team. Our focus is keeping existing customers successful: we take the feature requests and bug fixes that come through Customer Success and Product, prioritize them, and see them through to release. Because those requests can touch almost any part of the product, our work spans most of Sift’s major areas, including Payments, Account Takeover, Dispute Management, Console, Workflows, and the API.

The requests we take on are typically high-impact and come directly from customers, so the work you do reaches production quickly. We have already delivered a wide range of customer-requested improvements, with many more planned.

This is a backend-primary, full-stack role: you’ll spend most of your time in our backend systems, working in Java and Ruby on Rails, and frontend work is a nice-to-have rather than a core expectation today. That said, this is still a genuinely full-stack team, and you should expect the frontend to become a regular part of the job over time. As a senior or staff engineer, you’ll be expected to own complex, ambiguous problems end to end and exercise sound technical judgment about how to solve them.

Tech stack

BE Technical stack: Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Java, Dropwizard, GCP, Kubernetes, Kafka, BigTable, Spanner Graph DB, Postgres, Redis, gRPC, Python, Apache Airflow, Snowflake, BigQuery

FE Technical stack (nice-to-have): ReactJS, React, React Query, React Router, Cypress, Jest, Storybook, SCSS

Deep, hands-on backend experience is essential for this role. Prior experience with React is a plus but not required today; you should expect to build frontend skills on the job as the role evolves toward more full-stack work.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, and own complex backend features and services end to end that resolve high-impact customer requests and bugs.

  • Work closely with Customer Success and Product to turn customer requests and bug reports into well-scoped technical solutions, and see them through to production.

  • Work across different areas of the product, including Payments, Account Takeover, Dispute Management, Console, Workflows, and the API. You are not expected to know every area from the start; getting up to speed quickly is part of the role.

  • Exercise technical leadership: weigh in on architecture and design decisions, raise the bar through code review, and help the team make sound tradeoffs.

  • Mentor other engineers, and help maintain the tooling and engineering practices that let the team continue to deliver reliably.

  • Pick up frontend work (React) as team needs evolve; this isn’t the initial focus of the role, but full-stack flexibility is part of its long-term expectations.

Opportunities for you

  • Experience: you’ll gain exposure across Sift’s backend systems and products at scale – depth few roles offer.

  • Professional growth: we run bi-annual Growth Cycles rather than standard performance reviews; this role is a strong opportunity to deepen your backend expertise while expanding your scope and technical leadership.

  • Knowledge sharing: we hold regular Tech Talks, where you will learn how Sift handles data at a very large scale.

  • Culture of innovation: you can put your own ideas into practice at our bi-annual Hackathon.

What would make you a strong fit

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep, hands-on backend experience in Java and/or Ruby on Rails.

  • A demonstrated ability to own complex, ambiguous problems end to end and drive them to production with minimal oversight.

  • Experience providing technical leadership — weighing in on design and architecture, mentoring other engineers, and raising the bar on code quality.

  • Openness to working across the full stack, including the frontend (React), as the role evolves; prior React experience is a plus but not required today.

  • A focus on customers and on delivering results, not only on writing code.

  • Comfort moving between different products and codebases.

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-first approach.

  • A degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Strong backend experience in Java and/or Ruby is the primary requirement – if you have that, and you’re excited to grow into full-stack work over time, we would like to hear from you.
