JOB TITLE:  

Animal Research Compliance Coordinator

JOB PURPOSE:   

The Animal Research Compliance Coordinator administers and coordinates the University's Animal Care and Use Program by providing regulatory expertise, compliance oversight, and administrative leadership in support of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The position serves as a subject matter resource for investigators, research personnel, committee members, and institutional leadership regarding federal regulations and institutional policies governing the humane care and use of animals in research, teaching, and testing.

Working independently, the coordinator interprets and applies complex regulations, ensures timely and effective management of Animal Use Protocols throughout the project lifecycle, administers the University's Animal Occupational Health and Safety Program (AOHSP), coordinates Controlled Substance compliance activities for animal research, supports inspections and regulatory reporting, and promotes continuous improvement of the University's animal research compliance program.

This position involves on-call status. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

IACUC Administration (35%)

  • Coordinate all aspects of IACUC operations, including protocol submission, review, approval, amendments, continuing review, and study closure.
  • Review protocols for regulatory compliance and determine appropriate review pathways.
  • Prepare meeting materials, maintain committee records, document committee actions, and monitor regulatory deadlines.
  • Advise investigators regarding protocol development, regulatory requirements, and corrective actions needed for compliance. 

Regulatory Compliance Administration (30%)

  • Interpret and apply applicable federal regulations, agency guidance, accreditation standards, and institutional policies governing animal research.
  • Coordinate post-approval monitoring activities, regulatory reporting, federal agency inspections, internal reviews, and other compliance activities.
  • Maintain official compliance records and electronic protocol management systems.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and recommend improvements to policies, procedures, and business processes.

Animal Occupational Health and Safety Program (AOHSP) (15%)

  • Administer the University's Animal Occupational Health and Safety Program, including participant enrollment, medical surveillance, risk assessment, and compliance monitoring.
  • Collaborate with University partners to ensure compliance with occupational health requirements and recommend program improvements. 

Controlled Substances Compliance (10%)

  • Coordinate institutional processes related to the acquisition, registration, storage, use, inventory, transfer, and disposal of Controlled Substances used in animal research. 
  • Provide guidance to investigators regarding regulatory requirements and support inspections, audits, and compliance monitoring.

Education and Consultation (10%)

  • Serve as the primary resource for faculty, staff, students, veterinarians, and institutional officials regarding animal research compliance. 
  • Develop and deliver educational resources and training programs

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Perform special projects, as directed.
  • May serve on University and/or external committees or task forces as necessary.
  • Attend professional development activities related to research administration and animal research compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Experience: 1 year work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • 2 Years of work related experience
  • Experience working in animal research or care.
  • Experience supporting an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) or ability to obtain certification.
  • Experience interpreting federal regulations governing animal research. 
  • Experience using electronic protocol management systems.

WORK LOCATION:

On-Campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
