Position Description:

Under direct supervision, perform tasks involving radiation protection principles to ensure safety for personnel, the public, and the environment.  This position will provide support for large and small deactivation, decommissioning, demolition, environmental remediation and/or construction projects, to include all phases of the project. Typically, this position works with the waste group in the preparation, filling, loading, and unloading of waste containers. May perform other project activities as directed by Supervisor.

Education/Training/Experience Needed:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental health, radiologic technology, or a related field from an accredited program.
• Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent radiation safety certification preferred; state licensing for radiation safety preferred.
• Completion of radiation safety training and environmental monitoring protocols preferred.
• Prior experience working on government installation, base, or facility preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of radiological principles, standards, regulations, and industry best practices.
• Knowledge of radiation safety policies, regulations, and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.
• Knowledge of hazardous and radioactive waste handling, packaging, transportation, and disposal requirements.
• Knowledge of radiological monitoring instruments, radiation detection equipment, and associated maintenance requirements.
• Ability to accurately collect, document, and maintain radiological and environmental data.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with team members, supervisors, clients, and regulatory agencies.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply plans, specifications, procedures, technical documents, and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to adapt to changing work conditions, project requirements, and environmental conditions.

Special Requirements:

• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check which includes 7-year employment verification, Department of Motor Vehicles record search, criminal record search.
• Ability to pass HAZWOPER physical and wear a respirator as required for

Essential Job Functions:

• Apply radiation safety measures and utilize protective equipment to ensure the safety of personnel, the public, and the environment in accordance with ALARA principles.
• Perform radiological surveys, contamination assessments, and monitoring activities using appropriate instrumentation and established procedures.
• Identify, characterize, package, label, transport, and document hazardous and/or radioactive materials in compliance with applicable regulations.
• Maintain adequate inventories of radiological supplies, monitoring equipment, and personal protective equipment.
• Ensure radiological and environmental monitoring equipment is routinely inspected, calibrated, serviced, and maintained in proper working conditions.
• Assist waste management personnel with the preparation, loading, packaging, and securement of waste containers.
• Load, unload, identify, and distribute materials, tools, equipment, and supplies according to project plans and specifications.
• Fuel, inspect, and perform minor maintenance on equipment as directed by supervision.
• Conduct routine equipment inspections and promptly report deficiencies or safety concerns.
• Control site traffic and serve as a spotter for heavy equipment operating within remediation and waste management areas.
• Clean, prepare, and maintain remediation sites to eliminate potential hazards and support safe work operations.
• Signal equipment operators to facilitate the safe alignment, movement, and positioning of machinery, materials, and equipment.
• Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports related to radiological activities, waste management, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
• Support environmental remediation, decontamination, and waste management projects in accordance with project requirements and regulatory standards.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

• Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous
• Use varied hand and power tools and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Work Environment:

• This is an Onsite position that requires work to be performed onsite at an Aleut Federal location. 
• This position requires regularly working in outside weather conditions. Regularly work near moving mechanical parts and frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
• Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require hearing protect
