We're hiring Forest Inventory Technicians to support a statewide forest inventory effort across Maine. You'll work in the field alongside experienced foresters and forest scientists, collecting plot-level data used for forestcarbon accounting, growth modeling, and land management planning. This is hands-on, physically active work in the woods — walking to and establishing plots, measuring trees, and recording data accurately under real field conditions.

What You'll Do:

  • Navigate to and establish forest inventory plots using GPS/maps, working in varied terrain and forest types across Maine
  • Measure and record standard forest mensuration data, which may include:
  • Tree species identification, DBH (diameter at breast height), Tree height, Crown class, Health, Operate standard inventory equipment (diameter tape, clinometer or hypsometer, compass, GPS unit, data collection tablet/app, basic GIS)
  • Work in a two-person crew, partnered with an experienced forester or forest scientist
  • Follow all field safety protocols, including those related to weather, terrain, wildlife, and remote work

Qualifications Required:

  • Ability to hike several miles per day over uneven, sometimes rugged terrain, carrying field gear (pack weight roughly 15–25 lbs), in variable weather conditions
  • Comfort working outdoors for full days across a multi-week field season
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability in data recording
  • Ability to work well as part of a two-person field team
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to field sites across Maine (mileage/travel support provided). Drive time may be hours as some sites are remote.
  • Comfortable using or learning to use a GPS unit and a tablet-based data collection app

Preferred (not required):

  • Background in forestry, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field (coursework, degree, or field experience)
  • Prior experience with forest inventory, timber cruising, or ecological plot sampling
  • Familiarity with tree identification (Maine/Northeast species) or willingness to learn quickly
  • Experience with a compass, clinometer, or similar field instruments

Work will be four 10 hour days per week. Home on weekends.

Fieldwork occurs in forested settings statewide, in a range of weather conditions (heat, rain, cold, insects)

Some sites may require longer drives or overnight hotel stays for multi-day stretches at more distant properties; food, lodging, and mileage will be covered where applicable, with details provided during onboarding. Drive time can be billed.

Central location within the state (Bangor, Augusta, etc..) is preferred.

Work will last 4-6 weeks. In the event that we finish before 4 weeks, we will pay a bonus.
