Position Summary

The Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the successful delivery of development projects from design coordination through construction and handover. Working on behalf of the Developer (Principal), the Project Engineer oversees the execution of the base build scope, including piling, foundations, structural works, in-ground services, civil infrastructure, roads, external works and landscaping.

The role provides technical, commercial and site-based support to the Project Manager, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.

A key focus of the role is proactive site management, quality assurance, inspections, defect prevention and successful project handover.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Assist in the planning, procurement and delivery of construction projects.

  • Coordinate the delivery of all base build works including:

    • Piling and foundations

    • Structural concrete and steel

    • In-ground hydraulic, electrical and communications services

    • Civil infrastructure

    • Roads and pavements

    • Stormwater and drainage

    • External works and landscaping

  • Monitor contractor performance against programme, cost and quality objectives.

  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Coordinate project interfaces between consultants, contractors, authorities and internal stakeholders.

  • Support the Development Manager in achieving project milestones.

Site Management

  • Regularly attend site to monitor construction progress.

  • Verify works are undertaken in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.

  • Coordinate site inspections with consultants and contractors.

  • Monitor compliance with approved methodologies and construction sequencing.

  • Identify and resolve technical issues before they impact programme or quality.

  • Ensure contractors maintain appropriate housekeeping and site standards.


Quality Management

  • Implement and monitor project Quality Management Plans.

  • Review Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and contractor quality documentation.

  • Witness critical inspections and hold points.

  • Monitor workmanship standards across all disciplines.

  • Coordinate defect identification and rectification.

  • Ensure all quality records are maintained.

  • Drive a culture of "build it right the first time."

Inspections & Compliance

  • Coordinate inspections with:

    • Building Surveyors

    • Structural Engineers

    • Civil Engineers

    • Service Authorities

    • Local Authorities

    • Utility providers

  • Ensure statutory inspections are completed.

  • Monitor compliance with:

    • NCC

    • Australian Standards

    • Development approvals

    • Engineering approvals

    • Environmental requirements

    • WHS legislation

Commercial Management

  • Assist with review of contractor claims and progress reports.

  • Assist in assessing variations.

  • Monitor procurement status.

  • Review contractor programmes.

  • Assist in identifying opportunities for cost savings and programme improvements.

  • Support contract administration activities.

Design Coordination

  • Review design documentation for constructability.

  • Coordinate consultant responses during construction.

  • Oversee Requests for Information (RFIs) process.

  • Assist in resolving design issues.

Safety

While contractors retain responsibility for site safety, the Project Engineer will:

  • Monitor contractor WHS compliance.

  • Participate in safety walks and audits.

  • Report safety concerns promptly.

  • Promote a positive safety culture.

  • Ensure Principal obligations are appropriately discharged.

Practical Completion & Handover

Coordinate project completion activities including:

  • Practical Completion inspections

  • Defect management

  • Authority approvals

  • Occupancy requirements

  • As-built documentation

  • Warranties

  • Training records

  • Final handover documentation

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Delivery of projects to programme.

  • Achievement of quality objectives.

  • Successful completion of inspection milestones.

  • Ensure timely close-out of defects.

  • Budget performance.

  • Contractor performance.

  • Quality of project documentation.

  • Effective stakeholder communication.

  • Successful project handovers.

  • Compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent.

  • 5+ years' experience in construction or engineering.

  • Experience delivering civil and structural works.

  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing.

  • Experience with roads, services and external works.

  • Ability to interpret engineering and construction drawings.

  • Strong knowledge of Australian Standards and the NCC.

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.

  • High level of commercial awareness.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering industrial, commercial or mixed-use developments.

  • Knowledge of contract administration.

  • Understanding of development approvals and authority processes.

  • Experience managing quality systems and inspections.
