Job Summary

Oncology Registered Nurses are responsible for promoting and restoring patients’ health by completing the nursing process in an oncology setting. This position collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members to provide comprehensive, compassionate care. In addition, this role provides physical and psychological support to patients and families and may supervise assigned team members to help ensure quality care. Responsibilities include delivering care consistent with facility policies, procedures, standards of practice, and applicable state nursing regulations.

Job Description

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural, spiritual, and lifestyle factors of patients.

  • Develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient needs and standards of care, regularly evaluating and revising these plans as necessary.

  • Administer medications and treatments accurately and safely, following physician orders and hospital protocols, and monitor for adverse reactions.

  • Educate patients and families about health conditions, treatments, medications, and self-care strategies to promote understanding and compliance.

  • Collaborate with medical staff and ancillary departments to coordinate and optimize patient care, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient information, care activities, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care plans and interventions continuously, making necessary adjustments to improve patient health and achieve positive outcomes.

  • Ensure compliance with infection control protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements to maintain a safe healthcare environment.

  • Provide emotional support and therapeutic communication to patients and their families, addressing their emotional and psychological needs.

  • Supervise and delegate care provided by members of the healthcare team to ensure quality and efficiency.

  • Engage in continuous professional development and participate in performance improvement activities to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

  • Respond to code situations promptly and effectively, providing necessary interventions to stabilize patients.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Organizational and multitasking skills

  • Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member within a unit

  • Effective verbal and oral communication and problem-solving skills

  • EKG competency based on patient needs; see EKG and Advanced Life Support Requirements document

  • Fluency in English, including reading, speaking, and writing

  • Basic computer skills with the ability to navigate Microsoft Windows-based programs

  • High level of abstract reasoning to assess patients, evaluate interventions, and revise the plan of care based on patient outcomes

Education

  • Associate of Nursing required

  • Bachelor of Nursing preferred

Work Experience

  • One or more years of acute care hospital experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

Required-

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Basic Life Support – CPR Certification (BLS)

Preferred-
One or more of the following certifications are preferred:

  • Acute/Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (CCNS)

  • Neonatal Med Certification (NEONATAL MED)

  • Pediatric ER Assess, Recognize & Stabilization (PEARS)

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with OB/GYN Specialty (RDMS-OBGYN)

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Program

  • S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification

  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)

  • Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS)

  • Critical Care Registered Nurse – Tele-ICU (CCRN-E)

  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)

  • Oncology Nurse Society (ONS)

  • American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)

  • Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN)

  • Gerontological Nurse (GERO-BC)
