Laboratory Assistant II, Relief - PRN

Location: AdventHealth Shawnee Mission

Schedule: PRN | Evenings-Weekends

Job Summary

• Responsible for performing a variety of laboratory support procedures in assigned laboratory areas, including phlebotomy, specimen collection, specimen processing, and laboratory support functions in clinical and anatomical pathology. Ensures accurate and timely processing of specimens for testing and analysis while maintaining quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Supports laboratory operations through equipment maintenance, inventory management, customer service, and staff training activities. Participates in continuing education and competency requirements while contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory services.

• Shift: Primarily evenings and weekends. Scheduled hours may include 0400-1230 and 1200-2330 based on departmental needs.

Essential Functions

• Performs laboratory support procedures including specimen collection, specimen processing, accessioning, and transportation of patient samples.

• Collects patient, physician, and test order information and creates patient accounts while verifying required demographic, insurance, and identification information.

• Performs blood specimen collection, including venipuncture and capillary collection techniques for patients of all age groups, as assigned.

• Receives, processes, labels, centrifuges, aliquots, stores, and transports specimens according to established procedures and quality standards.

• Loads specimens onto pre-analytical instruments or delivers specimens to the appropriate testing department.

• Performs point-of-care testing procedures, including quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and result reporting when assigned.

• Provides clerical, reception, and customer service support, including answering telephones and assisting patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.

• May perform blood and blood component processing, storage, shipping, modification, and product selection utilizing approved transfusion information systems.

• May perform cytology preparation procedures, staining, and surgical pathology accessioning activities.

• May receive and process microbiology specimens, including preparing and inoculating culture media.

• Performs preventive maintenance, quality assurance activities, and basic troubleshooting on laboratory equipment as assigned.

• Maintains laboratory cleanliness through routine cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment.

• Monitors inventory levels and assists with stocking laboratory supplies and maintaining appropriate supply levels.

• Participates in laboratory, departmental, and organizational performance improvement activities.

• Assists with evaluating new equipment, technology, and procedures.

• Provides training, orientation, and preceptor support for new team members and students as assigned.

• Addresses customer service concerns within established guidelines and supports education efforts for clinical staff.

• Handles biological specimens, hazardous chemicals, and hazardous waste in accordance with safety regulations and organizational policies.

• Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment and follows infection prevention, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety standards.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of laboratory procedures, specimen collection, specimen processing, and laboratory operations.

• Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing with patients, team members, providers, and customers.

• Ability to read, understand, and interpret written instructions, technical information, and numerical data.

• Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and laboratory information systems.

• Ability to learn and effectively utilize electronic health records, laboratory software, and related technology systems.

• Ability to exercise sound judgment while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with applicable regulations.

• Ability to safely handle biological specimens, hazardous materials, chemicals, and laboratory reagents.

• Knowledge of laboratory testing processes, specimen requirements, and healthcare industry practices.

• Ability to evaluate specimens for accuracy, quality, acceptability, and compliance with collection requirements.

• Ability to accession specimens, document issues, and follow established laboratory procedures.

• Ability to perform waived testing with accuracy, consistency, reliability, and quality.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and operational needs.

• Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as needed.

• Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.

• Demonstrated technical skills related to blood collection and specimen handling.

• Ability to provide guidance and support to laboratory assistants and team members.

• Commitment to providing excellent customer service and maintaining professional relationships.

• Minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute preferred.

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.

• Technical or Vocational School training preferred.

Field of Study

• Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.

Work Experience

• Six months of relevant healthcare experience required.

• Six months of laboratory experience within AdventHealth preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

• Driver's License preferred.

• Phlebotomy Technician (PBT-ASCP) preferred.

• Medical Laboratory Associate (MLA-ASCP) preferred.

Additional Information

• Must successfully complete required continuing education, department-specific training, competency assessments, and safety requirements as determined by the department and organization.
