Senior Health & Safety Advisor

Downer is seeking a Senior Health & Safety Advisor to support safe and successful outcomes across our Transport & Infrastructure business. This role combines operational field leadership, technical expertise, governance and capability development to strengthen health and safety performance across a diverse operational environment. 

As a Senior Health & Safety Advisor, you will partner with operational leaders, frontline personnel and Health & Safety team members to improve risk management, strengthen critical controls and drive continuous improvement. This role requires a balanced approach between field engagement, systems and governance, data and reporting, and the development of people and capability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting operational leaders and frontline teams through coaching, mentoring and practical Health & Safety guidance.
  • Leading incident investigations, risk management activities, audits and assurance programs.
  • Monitoring and analysing performance data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Supporting compliance with Health & Safety systems, standards and legislative requirements.
  • Developing the capability of operational personnel and Health & Safety Advisors through coaching, learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Providing functional leadership and influencing positive change across the business.
  • Leading by example and promoting a culture of accountability, learning and continuous improvement.

 

About You

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (minimum).
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Health and Safety professional within a high-risk operational environment.
  • ICAM Lead Investigator qualification.
  • Quality/Safety Lead Internal Auditor qualification (desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience within civil construction, infrastructure, road maintenance, asphalt, utilities or similar operational industries.
  • Proven experience supporting frontline operational teams where work is planned, supervised and delivered in live field environments.
  • Experience leading incident investigations, assurance activities, audits and risk management processes.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety systems, governance, reporting and performance management.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop others to improve capability and performance.
  • Experience providing leadership through direct reports, indirect reports, project teams, functional leadership or mentoring relationships.
  • Previous people leadership or supervisory experience will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in injury management and workers compensation processes.
  • Ability to balance field leadership, systems, administration and operational priorities within a fast-paced environment.
