About

Stuff reaches more than 2 million New Zealanders every month. Every story read, every subscription purchased and every interaction with our digital products is an opportunity to create an exceptional experience.

We're looking for a Senior UX Designer who thrives on solving complex product challenges, influencing strategic decisions and designing experiences that millions of people rely on every day.

This is more than a design role. It's an opportunity to shape the future of New Zealand's largest digital news platform, helping define how audience needs, personalisation, AI and emerging technologies come together to create smarter, simpler and more meaningful digital experiences.

You'll partner with senior product leaders, engineers, editorial teams and commercial stakeholders to influence product direction from discovery through to delivery. You'll bring curiosity, strong design judgement and a deep understanding of human behaviour, balancing customer needs with commercial outcomes and technical possibilities.

In this role you’ll:
  • Lead discovery work to uncover user needs, behaviours and opportunities
  • Translate research and data into clear product direction and compelling user experiences
  • Design elegant, accessible experiences across web, mobile and emerging digital platforms
  • Create user journeys, information architecture, wireframes, prototypes and interaction models that solve real customer problems
  • Influence product strategy by advocating for user-centred design and evidence-based decision making
  • Partner closely with engineers to ensure high-quality implementation and continuous improvement
  • Champion accessibility, inclusive design and design system evolution
  • Use AI-powered tools to accelerate research, ideation, prototyping and design optimisation
  • Coach and influence designers and cross-functional teams, helping embed great design practice across the business

Why this role is different

Stuff is transforming how New Zealanders discover and engage with trusted journalism.

We're investing in modern digital products, AI-enabled experiences, personalisation and data-informed decision making to create the next generation of audience experiences.

This is a rare opportunity to work on products used by millions of people while tackling genuinely complex design challenges. You'll have the autonomy to shape experiences from concept to launch, influence strategic product decisions and help define the future of digital media in Aotearoa.

You'll bring:
  • Extensive experience in UX, Product Design or Interaction Design within complex digital product environments
  • An outstanding portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, end-to-end design leadership and measurable outcomes
  • Deep expertise in user research, service design, usability testing and customer-centred design methodologies
  • Advanced proficiency with Figma and modern prototyping tools
  • Strong experience using customer insights, experimentation and analytics to inform design decisions
  • Excellent understanding of accessibility standards, inclusive design and scalable design systems
  • Confidence influencing senior stakeholders and facilitating design-led conversations across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary product teams
  • A collaborative leadership style and a passion for mentoring others and lifting design capability
You'll be highly regarded if you have experience with
  • Large-scale consumer digital products
  • Media, publishing, subscriptions or content platforms
  • Personalisation, recommendation systems and AI-powered experiences
  • Experimentation, A/B testing and optimisation programmes
  • Designing products that balance customer value with commercial outcomes

What you'll get

  • The opportunity to shape products used by more than two million New Zealanders every month
  • Significant influence over the future direction of one of New Zealand's most recognised digital brands
  • Complex design challenges with genuine national impact
  • A highly collaborative product, engineering and editorial culture
  • The freedom to experiment with new technologies, AI tools and emerging design practices
  • Ongoing professional development and opportunities to grow your influence
  • Flexible working and a strong commitment to wellbeing
