<strong>IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT<br><br></strong><strong>DYSLEXIA SPECIALIST<br><br></strong><strong>Job Description<br><br></strong><strong>JOB TITLE:</strong> Dyslexia Specialist<br><br><strong>WAGE/HOUR STATUS:</strong> Exempt<br><br><strong>REPORTS TO:</strong> Dyslexia Coordinator<br><br><strong>PAY GRADE:</strong> Teacher Schedule<br><br><strong>WORK CALENDAR:</strong> 187 Days +8<br><br><strong>FUNDING SOURCE:</strong> Dyslexia Allotment<br><br><strong>DEPARTMENT:</strong> Special Education<br><br><strong>DATE REVISED:</strong> February 2026<br><br><strong>PRIMARY PURPOSE:</strong> The dyslexia specialist will assist the coordinator in the overall<br><br>improvement of the district dyslexia program by coaching and<br><br>mentoring dyslexia interventionists and specialists, developing and<br><br>supporting the instructional program and delivery of services, and<br><br>ensuring full compliance of local, state, and federal mandates.<br><br><strong>Qualifications<br><br></strong><strong>Minimum Education/Certification:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Bachelor’s Degree</li><li> Valid Texas Teaching Certificate</li><li> Certified Academic Language Therapist or Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (preferred)</li><li> Special Education Certification<br><br></li></ul><strong>Special Knowledge/Skills<br><br></strong><ul><li> Knowledge of dyslexia and related disorders</li><li> Knowledge of dyslexia therapy programs and best practices for remediation of reading<br><br></li></ul>difficulties/disabilities<br><br><ul><li> Knowledge of local, state, and federal guidelines and mandates for dyslexia and related<br><br></li></ul>disorders<br><br><ul><li> Experience administering and interpreting assessments used for dyslexia evaluation</li><li> Excellent communication and interpersonal skills</li><li> Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks within a complex and compliance driven<br><br></li></ul>service department<br><br><strong>Minimum Experience<br><br></strong><ul><li> Three (3) years of successful classroom experience</li><li> Three (3) years of experience as a dyslexia interventionist/specialist/therapist<br><br></li></ul><strong>Major Responsibilities And Duties<br><br></strong><ul><li> Serve as instructional coach and mentor to dyslexia interventionists and specialists.</li><li> Visit dyslexia interventionists and specialists regularly to observe instruction and review<br><br></li></ul>compliance records, and provide timely feedback on observations of strengths and<br><br>opportunities for growth.<br><br><ul><li> Lead development and implementation of district-adopted dyslexia curriculum(s).</li><li> Assist with planning and leading the district dyslexia leadership team and department<br><br></li></ul>meetings.<br><br><ul><li> Support with the selection of instructional materials/resources and the selection of<br><br></li></ul>intervention and remediation techniques/programs.<br><br><ul><li> Lead and develop professional development opportunities for dyslexia interventionists,<br><br></li></ul>classroom teachers, and other educators within the district.<br><br><ul><li> Attend regional professional development opportunities and leadership meetings to stay<br><br></li></ul>abreast of compliance updates and learn new information and ideas to improve services<br><br>offered in the district.<br><br><ul><li> Participate in data analysis discussions with the department leadership team to identify<br><br></li></ul>additional areas of focus to improve student outcomes.<br><br><ul><li> Work collaboratively with campus administration teams as needed to address concerns,<br><br></li></ul>support campus interventionists, and ensure compliance with state and federal mandates.<br><br><ul><li> Work collaboratively with the dyslexia evaluation team to ensure alignment of evaluations<br><br></li></ul>and services.<br><br><ul><li> Work collaboratively within the department and with other district departments as needed.</li><li> Support with operational management and logistics within the department (scheduling of<br><br></li></ul>services, 504/ARD meetings, curriculum design and inventory management, compliance<br><br>records, etc).<br><br><ul><li> Assist with dyslexia evaluations (as needed to ensure compliance with timelines).</li><li> Other duties as assigned.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Supervisory Responsibilities<br><br></strong>None<br><br><strong>Working Conditions<br><br></strong><strong>Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:</strong> Must maintain emotional control and<br><br>exercise reasoning and problem-solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to<br><br>communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze<br><br>data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel.
