Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is to serve as a field-based medical expert within the Medical Affairs Organization and engage in mutual scientific exchange. The Field Medical team enhances the understanding of the scientific and medical value of uniQure's gene therapy products with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), and other stakeholders to further patient outcomes. The MSL will act as a regional medical and scientific resource who supports the changing needs of healthcare professionals. MSLs respond to customer enquiries to ensure focused and balanced clinical and scientific information that supports the appropriate use of uniQure's products.
This position reports to the Executive Director, Field Medical. This role will require up to 50% travel across the UK territory, including periodic travel to uniQure's UK and European offices.

The responsibilities of this role are organized into five functional areas:
Scientific Engagement & KOL Relations
- Demonstrate deep scientific expertise on uniQure's gene therapy products and therapeutic areas to exchange relevant information and insights with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) across the UK.
- Build, cultivate and maintain a focused group of regional KOLs — including leading clinicians, academics and NHS Trust specialists — to ensure understanding of evolving healthcare trends across the relevant therapeutic area landscape.
- Identify, establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key experts, investigators and institutions, including NHS Teaching Hospitals and academic medical centers.
- Represent the Medical Affairs team at scientific conferences, medical congresses, continuing medical education events, advisory boards, regional meetings and patient advocacy events in the UK and internationally, gathering relevant insights and supporting educational opportunities.
- Identify and communicate key clinical and research issues and insights from industry leaders to appropriate departments to help shape company research, development and strategies for investigational and commercialized products.
Clinical & Research Support
- Assist, upon request from Clinical Development, with clinical studies including investigator and site identification, site initiation visits, and feedback regarding operational management to ensure optimal site selection and performance within the UK.
- Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information, research support and educational resources associated with uniQure's products and disease state areas, ensuring all responses are compliant and balanced.
- Respond to unsolicited requests regarding interest in Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISS) and support ISS submissions through appropriate internal processes.
Medical Education & Stakeholder Engagement
- Train and facilitate speakers on uniQure's products in compliance with ABPI guidelines.
- Provide medical educational support to NHS payers, commissioners, service providers, patient advocacy groups and other key stakeholders as requested, in full compliance with the ABPI Code.
- Engage with NHS-specific stakeholders including Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), NICE appraisal processes and Specialized Commissioning teams to support understanding of uniQure's therapeutic area and products.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure strong aligned support of treatment centers of excellence.
- Recognize and capture scientific insights that deepen understanding of the needs of KOLs, healthcare professionals and patients, and share with internal stakeholders.
Cross-functional Collaboration & Planning
- Build and cultivate working relationships across internal stakeholders — Medical Affairs colleagues, Clinical Operations, Market Access, HEOR, R&D, and Commercial — while maintaining full compliance with relevant company, industry, legal and regulatory requirements.
- Work efficiently and balance all activities to enhance performance and execute local medical plan strategies within specified timelines.
- Participate on committees or project teams that support MSL strategies and tactics as delegated by MSL leadership.
Compliance, Safety & Continuous Learning
- Uphold the ABPI Code of Practice and MHRA guidelines in all aspects of scientific exchange, including responses to on- and off-label enquiries and unsolicited requests for medical information, in accordance with uniQure policies and procedures.
- Ensure all transfers of value to HCPs and healthcare organizations are documented and disclosed in accordance with the ABPI Disclosure Code.
- Document and forward reports of adverse events according to uniQure's pharmacovigilance policy and MHRA reporting requirements to ensure the safe and effective use of uniQure products.
- Maintain and develop clinical expertise through attendance at relevant symposia, scientific workshops, key journals and required internal training, and actively pursue continuous learning in the therapeutic area, disease states and relevant business topics.
Qualifications & Skills
- Advanced scientific or clinical degree (e.g. PharmD, PhD, MD or equivalent) with a minimum of 4 years' experience as an MSL; background in neurology, rare disease or gene therapy strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain credible scientific relationships with leading experts in the field, including within the NHS and UK academic institutions.
- Sound working knowledge of the ABPI Code of Practice, MHRA guidelines, and the UK healthcare and reimbursement environment, including NICE processes and NHS commissioning.
- Ability to operate autonomously across a UK-wide territory, interpreting and translating complex scientific data into clinically relevant messages for diverse audiences.
- Clear understanding of NHS structures, commissioning pathways and clinical decision-making guidelines, with the ability to engage credibly with clinicians, NHS payers and institutional stakeholders.
- Exceptional ability to synthesize complex scientific information and communicate it clearly across written, verbal and presentation formats.
- Highly self-motivated with strong organizational and prioritization skills and the ability to navigate complex, ambiguous situations independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment.
